Shootall - my apologies.  I live near Roanoke at Fincastle.  A local game warden told me there were none left anywhere in the state.  He was obviously wrong.  Again, I'm sorry.  Mike

One warden told my son they come from Flordia and since they are federal protected we can't hunt them. I hear the ones in West Va. came from out west , crossed the Mississippi river and we can hunt those , go figure . I live about 30 miles from the capital in Richmond and have had BEARS in the yard twice . I was told the fires in the Dismal Swamp are driving them our way.
Oh well . Hey I'm a life member of the RMEF and read an article in the magazine they send that stated no Elk had been killed in Va. since the 1800 or such. Back in the 60's and 70's my big game lic. listed Elk and I remember someone killing one around 1968 or such . Guess the pros aren't always correct.

The "officials" here in CT have NO comment on the big cats here in CT. I have seen one dead on the shore line (New London) and a very good trusted friend has pic of one in his yard in Sharron CT.

Last year one was killed on the freeway. HUGE uproar people where outraged they could be in. The state! LOL any how the "Official" word from our DEP was this cat was from get this..... South Dakota!!  How did they determine that?? ANY thi g but acknowledgement what almost all sportsmen already know!!!

I remember years ago we had black bears but the state said no we do not. It was over ten years before they FINEALY acknowledged there is a population living and breeding in Connecticut...

Too funny!

Here(Ct) i've seen bobcat,  lynx, bears and yotes so far.  They say there is a mountainlion in the water shed land thats nearby.  I have blackbear cub trackes in my yard too.  They shot and killed the sow in a nearby town.  Its in the courts hands now i think useless killing.  We have a local mountainlion who lives around blackrock state park its been confirmed bu fly fisherman too.     1911crazy
BTW;  On my land / national forest its my 357mag snubbie with stout loads afterall Emler Keith killed every north american game with a 357mag, a 41mag and a 44mag.  In any bear country bigger is better. In a thicker skinned animal(bear) more penetration is needed.  If its on top of you like in your face smiling shoot in the r5oof of the mouth. Brain shot.  Have a plan.

The only people who complain about "blocky" are people who haven't carried one very much. My 23 is a dream to carry. This is a photo of myself usi g a "MIC" holster and my G23. VERY comfortable, stays put and as you can see, is consealed in a T shirt.

Of the two you mention I would prefer the .40, just in case for some reason the bullets did not expand as intended (Murphy).  My personal choice, however, given the possible bear encounter would be a 10mm in a semi-auto, or .44 Mag or larger in a revolver.

Im going to get a Sig 2022 in either .40 or 9mm for camping/hiking.

While I AM in Grizz country ( 30 mins from Glacier National Park ) I have no intentions of using a handgun against a bear.

Generally speaking the gun is more likely to be used against meth heads in the woods than it is animals.  I dont know which one has more range but whichever it is, I think that might be more ideal. I have been leaning towards the 40 for more power/mass but the 9 offers a few more rounds and better follow-up shots.

What do you boys think?

While having fun with CWLongshots photo  ;D  really didn't give an opinion (?) on the question. Never having been in your area, but am aware that Glacier NP has the largest population of Grizzly bears in the lower 48, I would choose something a bit larger in caliber and performance. We have meth heads or druggies of one type or another around here also but for the most part they hang in town where they can steal stuff (with the rare exception of a few enterprising souls who try and grow MJ in the Mtns behind me, don't know where they get the water?) and whereas few would WANT to use a handgun on nasty bears, that may be the biggest danger in you're situation.  The way I would make a decision on weaponry would be to take the largest threat/need I thought I would encounter and prepare for that..so in conclusion, if it'll work on a bad bear, it should be just fine for the druggies as well.

In the woods I shoot way more snakes than bears , cougars , ET"S , big foot's, zombies  etc. So I would go 40 and get more shot in a cci shot round  ;)

It IS in a holster!!  Look close at my belt where the slide touches it. See that black string, thats part of the MIC holster. Its a Kydex molded piece with a string, as you draw the pistol, the holster snaps off, very slick and zero worries about loosing the glock down the drawers... Google MIC holster, you will see... ;)

Tht is its one defect... ;)

But as far as where its pointed, a Glock will not fire unless the trigger is pulled. The MIC completely covers the trigger guard. It dosen't clear until its well clear of your body. Otherwise, I wouldn't have it there either. ;)

Para P16-40 with 10mm barrel.  16 rnds of 10mm, handloaded 200 grn hard cast RNFP 1250fps.  Mepro adj night sights, for early morning, late evening.  Cocked and locked.  Yeah baby, yeah!!

CW, I don't know about that carry method.  I really would be uncomfortable at where that thing is pointed. :)

If I was going out into grizz country that would be my only consideration in choosing a carry gun. That rules out most semi autos. Bear sticks his nose in your tent you'll wish you had a .460 or .500, not a meth head gun. Folks been et by grizz.

At that range I would rather be pointing a 12 ga loaded with slugs .

Me too! After a good scare I wouldn't go in the woods for years without a 12 ga. pump shotgun. I've calmed down some. Odds are we won't get 'et, but "wrong place wrong time" happens. Lotta luck involved.

I would carry a rifle if I knew was going into hostile territory.  My preference would be for a Kalashnikov in 7.62 as a better overall defense against lots of stuff; I would use the pistol for finishing shots.  If I was more likely to encounter a large bear than a meth zombie I would carry a large bore lever rifle; if it was more zombie than bear it would be the Kalashnikov.  I would use the pistol for finishing shots.  Either caliber is sufficient for your needs, get what you are comfortable with.

I agree with this idea.  I would take this into the woods if I thought as he does:

This is my Ak pistol and well suited int the woods if you think you need this kind of protection!!!  But I have to say if there is any possibility of a brown bear in my area, I would never think of carrying an anemic weapon as a 9mm or .40 cal. street gun.  Just my thoughts of course.

Seriouly how about a good .357, 44 special or magnum.  Now I would feel a lot better with one of these!
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

I've had a few 9's and 40's.  The Ruger SR40c is the best woods, farm and CCW pistol running IMHO.

I find the extra power of the forty to be more cmforting than the extra cap of a 9.  YMMV.

I ended up with a Glock 27 40SW.

I carry spray for bears, they are the only animal on earth that I personally believe spray is a better option over bullets simply because they are so fast and so tough. Of course people will be debating guns/spray/calibers till the end of time.

I still like the Sig but the weight of the Glock was a big selling point.

Love it so far! I have a cheap Blackhawk IWB holster, I got an old camera case with a belt loop from the thrift store for $3. After a little cutting and some velcro Im able to SECURELY mount the holster inside the case and carry it on my belt. I do this for both comfort and easily accessible concealed carry.

I really only carry when Im out fishing or in the woods. But if I want to carry in town I just slide the holster out and put in in my pants.

On a side note, the first time I shot my Glock I also shot my friends Sig. Boy the sig shoots nice, but for my application right now, the Glock is all I need. I do forsee myself getting a Sig in the future though.

I have owned two 220's and a 229, twice.  ( I have a good friend who always gets In a $$ jamb. So every couple years I "buy" his sig 229. ;) )

I like them too, but side by side, day in and day out. Everything on the line... I'll stake my life on my glocks. The sigs are as good or better, but I don't get the same confidence with them or even my beloved 1911's as I do my G23 ESP.  Espically my G23....
