why would chev do this.
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:00:37 PM »
i was cleaning out my 06 silverado the other day and was using some armoral on the inside and somehow got some down in the faceplate for my radio. It shorted out the display. I could live with it as it still works but my driver information center went blank too. I about need it for milage for oil changes ect. Come to find out today after some research that the power for the information center is routed first through the radio face plate. It has nothing to do with the radio operation just the display. Now why the hell would they do that. Why wouldnt they use a seperate circuit or at least feed the info center first so when the radio display fails you at least still have a info center. then i find out if you want to go with an aftermarket radio you have to buy a converter to power the dash display and thats about a 100 bucks. Im a chev fan through and through but some engineer had his head up his but when he designed this!

i can understand your frustration.
when you apply armor-all or anything
like that, it is supposed to be sprayed
on the rag then wiped on.
you would have got the same result
with water or coke or any liquid. one
of our radio techs told me a long time ago
that the number one cause of radio and
instrument failure was due to "supersized"
fountain drinks in cupholders.
way too much electrical garbage in modern
vehicles i.m.o. but they do put it there
because folks buy it .
i always get the least amount of electrcal
gadgetry on a vehicle as i can.
todays vehicles require a very large
amount of electricity to run compared
to those of 30 years ago, and the potential
for something to go on the blink increases
with the amount of options you buy.

hope you get it handled
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Lloyd - Kind of a dumb question, but did you check the fuse block?  If I remember right, there are 3 of them in that truck.  The owners manual should tell which one to check.

ya i did. The fuse is fine. As a matter of fact that had me scatching my head too as i would have thought the first thing that would have happened is the fuse would have blown. It started out intermitantly and then just wouldnt come back on at all. I found a used radio on ebay for 70 bucks so at least the fix is realitvely cheap.
