209 x 17 muzzle loader
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:02:22 AM »
I have a N.E. 20 gauge that I want to make into a 209 x 17 muzzle loader. I found 17 liners and want to tread it into a 20 gauge plug and drill the back out to except a 209 primer. I can not find a steel 20ga plug. So I want to make out of a brass plug. Like to make it in to a breech load. Does anyone know where to by one or have it made? And has anyone out there ever build one before?

I have a .32 that Larry did for me .There is some information on the H&R ML forum. You may want to post there for more help. Mine was done with a 8mm Mauser bbl and Larry made the plug.I think maybe your biggest problems may come from lack of componets and trying to get bullets to engage the rifling. I Look forward to your progress. There are also others there who have tried or at least researched your idea. Good luck .Kurt

Or I'll just move it there, that's where I thought it should be anyway.  ;)

Hey I just moved it here, so if I posted in the wrong spot lets move it. I was going to use pellets with it and load it from the back them the 209 primer.

soaf,

A few years back I converted a 17 HMR to a 209 x .17 ML or breech loader. I had to take the rimfire barrel and put it on a center fire receiver. I use a modified 17 HMR case as the breech plug/chamber protector. It has been turned down so that a 209 will fit in behind it with an o-ring between them and another o-ring in front of the primer rim to make up for the .17 HMR rim thickness for a seal. Just put o-rings on your primers before shooting, then you don't have to do it each time you load. I used sized .177 cal lead pellets for projectiles but loaded them through the breech.

Not really a cost effective alternative, considering the price of 209 primers nowadays, more of a novelty than anything. It's actually easier, a lot less messy, and almost as cheap to use 17 HMR ammo.

The beauty of my conversion is that it is completely reversible in just a matter of seconds. 209 primers are filthy buggers, not as consistent, nor as effective, as compared to the .17 HMR ammo.

Good luck with your build!

Busta, Hey thanks for the reply. I saw one build sometime back and thought I would try it. This guy build his on an old Martini but his was a 22. It looked like a model 7 or the favorite rifle. Just a back yard plinker.

Combines Old-West styling with modern-day technology. It’s the perfect choice if you’re looking for a plinking gun that also has a touch of nostalgia. The 209 ignition uses no powder, only a 209 shotgun primer, and shoots .177-cal. pellets or BBs. A beautiful wood stock and a blued barrel come together to form a rifle anyone would be proud to call their own.
Barrel length: 17-3/4".
Overall length: 34-1/2".
Weight: 3-1/2 lbs.

Well I got one and man is it fun. Got to shoot down the hall way, which is out 10 yards. It will shoot half way trough a 6'' phone book and trough both sides of a soup can. Groups are real good. going to be a great small game gun and plinker.

Kurt, I saw some in 223 a case that would hold a 209 and a 22 pellet.  But I was wanting a 17 and I was going to try to make one. But after I added up the coast it way out there. So when I saw this one in cables at half price I had to get it. Its hard hitting and I am going to try it out on small game. Just something different and fun. Does the 22 cal. hit hard?

I never tried any powder in mine . I was mostly just foolin around trying to make a air gun of sorts without buying a air rifle but the primers are just to loud and actually illegal to shoot in my back yard because of the primer propellant. My small bore ML is the 32 Huntsman that Larry built for me from a 8mm Mauser bbl it hits hard. Kurt
