7-30 Waters Barrel Question
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:46:18 AM »
I posted this on a different forum and haven't figured it out yet, so I will try the experts here!

I have been lingering on here for a couple weeks and now finally signed up! I am a new owner of a T/C Contender (G1, hard open). I picked it up about a month ago. I have now fallen deep, already picking up another barrel. At a gun show this weekend I picked up a T/C Custom Shop Super 14 7-30 waters barrel. It has a 2" port job (or is it a brake) on it and I trying to identify who did it. I looked on the T/C site and didnt see anything similar on there. No real reason why I want to know, I just have a curious mind!

Also any tips on reloading for it Id love to hear. Im 27 and have been reloading before I could drive thanks to my dads influence. I really enjoy reloading and am looking forward to playing with the new barrel.

I have the 14" bbl non-ported version of this.  I have had the best luck with 120gr sierra pro-hunter soft point.  I use 35.0gr of RL15 and consistently shoot 1" or better at 100 yards (you should review the published reload data and work your way up to this load).  I have even had a few groups in the 1/2" range.  I have tried the 139gr soft points and 162 sst but can't get them to shoot as well as the 120.  I also tried H322 powder and didn't get as good of results with it either.

As for dies, I bought the Lee full length resize with seater die and then ordered the factory crimp die.  Most people say "you don't need to crimp with single shots" but I do a light crimp anyway because I believe it makes the load more consistent.  That is just me.  I found that full length resizing stretches the cases more than actually shooting does so I decided to get a neck sizer after I fireformed the cases initially.  Nobody listed one.  I found a universal 7mm neck sizer that Hornady made, but it required you to lube and could cause stretching so I didn't like it.  I found that the 7mm/08 case is only about .005 shorter than the 7-30 (the 7-30 trim to length overlaps the 7mm/08 max length).  I bought the Lee neck sizer for the 7mm/08 and have been using it for about a year now without a hitch.  The Lee neck sizer is about the only one that doesn't require lubing, which makes reloading much simpler.

As for the cases, I got once fired 30-30 cases, lube them up good and then run through the Lee full length die.  You get a second shoulder on the case (looks kind of weird, but it is normal).  Tumble the cases again to clean off the lube.  Go ahead and load your rounds and then go and shoot.  Once you fireform them the first time, the 2nd shoulder goes away and you have a new 7-30 case.  I then neck size after that.  The double shoulder case shoots surprisingly well.

It has been a lot of fun loading and shooting this round.  I am still hoping to get my first white tail with it this year.  Good luck!!

My barrel is a 10" factory, and I reload 120 Nosler BTs with a maximum (Hodgdon data) load of Varget.  I get 2200 fps with the 10" and would expect 200-250 more with the 14" tube.  My barrel is set up with a Simmons 2-6 scope and will reliably hit an orange at 200 yds (not that I can do it reliably, but the gun can).  I reload with a standard RCBS full length die set, using reformed 30-30 brass.  I've found that the throat in my factory chamber is quite long, and the 120 nosler is only in the neck about 0.150" when out to the lands.  No problem in a single shot, and it allows for a bit more powder capacity (the load I use is listed as compressed, but not with the bullet seated out as far as I do).  I still haven't run into a deer with this gun, but have high hopes for this fall.  Good luck with your new toy1

I've gone with the Nosler 120 BT and Reloader 15.  I too use 30-30 brass resized to 7m.  As Rosewood said, the 2nd shoulder is no big deal and shoots out on the 1st shot.  Actually I see no difference in accuracy.  Have fun with the Tender.

Thanks everyone! I did a bunch of loading and im just impatiently waiting to head north and get out the chronograph. Im heading up a week from tomorrow, so I will be able to post how it went.

As for the loads, I did a few.  Im trying a few with 140 Nosler BTSP bullets and a bunch with the 120 Sierra pro hunter bullets. Now the brass, I have a bunch of different "types".  Winchester 30-30 (necked down), R&P 30-30 necked down, actual 7-30 waters Federal brass, and finally some 7R (7mm international rimmed). I want to see if they will fire form properly. Its very similar to the 7-30 waters but still different so hopefully it works out. For Powder I am trying a couple different ones (Winchester 748 ball powder and IMR-4895)

I fire formed mine by using the cornmeal method and it worked great. The only thing wasted was some red dot shotgun powder and primers ,no lead or more expensive powder wasted. Plus no cooper in the barrel to clean out.
