1871 B&C
« on: October 09, 2012, 12:25:35 AM »
I have a B&C in 45/70. The problem is that the rifle shoots left. I have drifted the front sight and the rifle still shoots to the left. Is there any thing I can do to fix this problem.

If it has the factory WGRS site, it's windage adjustable too.

I have a 1898 Krag sight on the rear and a Lyman .584 on the front. I installed the WGRS sight on the rear and the rifle still shoots 4ins to the left.

The old master gunsmiths bent the barrels to fine tune them.Pope had a tree beside his shop that he used to "tune" them in.Fork in the tree was just right size and did not mar the  finish. :o

If there's not enough adjustment with the sights, then it needs to go back to H&R for repair/replacement, call H&R repair and make arrangements for them to send a shipping label for return. But are you sure you're moving the front sight the correct way? It needs to be drifted to the left to move impact to the right, I've seen frustrated shooters at the range cuz they moved their sights the wrong way.   ;D

And Ive even seen (Noooo, never done it myself.... :P ) match shooters move a rear peep the wrong way 'cause the screw turned opposite their 'regular' rifle.
Yep, some guns are just wrong, and though the barrel tweak has been know to be done it does set up some stresses in the barrel that can cause some strange bullet pitching behavior as they heat up. As long as the factory will make it right, by all means get it done.

Went out to the range today and tried to sight the rifle in but it would not, it kept shooting to the left. I drifted the front sight all the way to the left half of the sight was hanging off the barrel. I call H&R last week they told me to call them with the serial number and they would send me a shipping tag and send the rifle back to them. Maybe the next time it will be better. The rifle did shoot good 1/2 group at a 100yards but far to the left. I love the gun with Krag rear sight.

If it's shooting to the left, you have adjust/move the front sight to the right.

No, the rear sight would move to the right. The front sight should chase the group to move it. In this case, to the left.

Repeat this 20 times and you probably wont forget it......
You move the rear sight the direction you want the bullet to go.
(by inference then, you move a front sight opposite that)
