Amazing Volcano photos.
- Their photographs pit the brilliant orange lava against a steamy, blue-gray backdrop. Mostly, the images are captured in low-daylight or nighttime, and their juxtaposed images can be compared to Salvadore Dali paintings.
- Their photographs pit the brilliant orange lava against a steamy, blue-gray backdrop. Mostly, the images are captured in low-daylight or nighttime, and their juxtaposed images can be compared to Salvadore Dali paintings, the Daily Mail notes.
- “Our days are spent on the edge of volcanoes, either leaving at midnight to get out before the light of the rising sun or hiking in the day and then staying overnight,” says Kale, 35, who’s from Hawaii. His partner, Selway, 28, is from Washington.
- “We shoot pictures all over the world, but our volcano images are shot here on the island because it's so spectacular,” Kale adds. “It's such an extraordinary experience and we feel lucky to be able to turn our photography into what we do for a living.”
- Many of their images capture the lava as hits the water and explodes into plumes of smoke and steam. To get their risky shots, the two men use simple protective casings around their cameras, and wear just swim shorts and flippers to navigate the ocean waves.
- They tread water that’s 110 degrees. Just 20 feet away, the water is boiling, Kale says. “We have a lot of fun, but it’s extremely dangerous,” he says. They have not escaped without injuries.
- Kale fell into a lava tube last year, breaking his ankle. “After climbing out we had to lash my foot to my leg with a tripod, camera strap and belt, and hike over the rugged terrain for two miles,” he recalls.
- The photographers manage to capture stark, scary images of molten lava against crashing waves. “Not many people die each year, but when they do it's normally in large groups when large chunks of land drop into the sea,” Kale says.
- While he acknowledges his passion for what he and Selway, he is cautious about others doing the same thing. “I wouldn’t recommend anyone trying for themselves.”
- Danger aside, their photography is unlike any other. Likewise, their satisfaction is unequivocal. “The views are really something special and completely unique every time,” Kale says. “I wouldn't rather be doing anything else.”
