Both eyes open?
« on: February 19, 2004, 03:13:35 AM »
I think I shoot better with both eyes open. Closing the left gets tiring over the course of a day and seems to require just that little bit of extra tension I don't need. However, any movement to my left then distracts me. I've tried a "shade" on the side of the glasses but it doesn't block my vision. Even played with a shade over half the left lens but that was unsatisfactory. Would appreciate any advice. Also, where do I get the rubber eyecup for the scope to block the peripheral vision of the RIGHT eye?
Or should I forget about trying to create a little "vision tunnel" all the way to the target and just work on not allowing myself to be distracted?

Ajj,  I shot for 20 years closing my left eye. I can not shoot with it open, and the eye strain will definately do you in. I tried the blinder on the scope and a blinder on my hat. I didn't like either one of them. I finally setteled for a cover on my left eye. It took a while to get used to, but I really think it has paid off. I am able to hold  much longer to get the best shot possible. Give it some time, it will pay off. My scores have improved.

I've been thinking about trying a shade for my left eye also. I have a black one but have heard that a lighter color that lets thru some light will keep both eyes dialated the same. Any opinions? Sometimes I just close the left eye just about half way. That seems to reduce the strain some. Where I seem to really get tired of squinting is while spoting. My right waters from stairing thru the scope and my left hurts from being clamped shut. Maybe I could use it more then, then while shooting. LouisV

ajj,

I had the same problem and went to one of the fold down eye patches in black, tried white but didn't kill all the distractions, it took time but it paid of my scores went up, and I was not as tired at the end of a 120 match, fold down because I can flip it up and see what I'm about to run over. A good pair of shooting glasses in a light yellow also helped, mine are decots, but there a a few out there.
Good luck and I do feel your pain.

If it was easy everyone would be master class.

Long, long time ago pirates had the same problem, so they covered one eye,
I myself am fortunate enough that I shoot with both eyes open, tried diferent variants, and at the end if you do not pay any attention to it - then it is not bothering you.

hope you will find your answer

Glad to know that it's not a challenge (there is no such thing as a "problem") that I managed to dream up alone and that there are things to try. Thanks to all.

I think shooting with both eyes open has to do with some training. Being in Law Enforcement - we are trained to shoot with both eyes open. Both for handguns and rifles - shotguns. I never even thought anything about it - but now thinking about it _ (getting a head ack here) I also shoot competition - bench - ect., with both eyes open.
