Gun Shops
« on: August 04, 2012, 09:52:58 AM »
The elk thread got me to thinking.  My favorite gun shop was in Iron River at "Larry's".  But he has retired now and is no longer in the business.

Are there other good gun shops in the U.P?  I saw mention of "Tony's" and am looking for info.

Thanks,

Tony's is located in Dafter, north of Paradise in the far eastern UP.  I don't get there often because it's a full day's trip there and back.  Lots of used guns there, takes a couple hours looking to even scratch the surface.
The one I go to most often is J's in Powers.  It's close by, friendly, fair prices, but a relatively small stock on hand.
When I pass thru Ishpeming I always make it a point to stop in at Wilderness Sports.  Reminds me of the "old time" gun shops - squeaky floors, crowded with merchandise, used guns out on racks where you can handle them.  Decent selection of new longguns, pretty good stock of handguns.
Been to the Gun Barn in Iron River.  Lots of guns, but after looking at the prices I didn't feel inclined to buy anything!
Hope a few others chime in here with some new locations to explore!

small shop here in munising, nothing much though. Theres wilderness sports in ishpeming, they sometimes have some cool stuff. Got to agree though nothing up here compares to tonys. If it were a 100 miles closer my buget would be in trouble!

I've been to J's and the Gun Barn.  The next time I have to go to SSM I will have to try to get to Tony's.

Thanks,

If  you're in the Soo, just head South on M-129 to 15 Mile Road. Tony's is on the corner.

My boss is over that way this week and hopefully will stop by Tony's.  I'm looking forward to see what they have in the shop.

Thanks for the info.

Spruce, Your U.P map is messed up.  Tony's is at the corner of 15 Mile Road and M-129 north of Pickford and south of Dafter.  Dafter is way south of Paradise, and if Tony's were north of Paradise, he'd be selling wet guns out of Lake Superior or on the beach at Whitefish Point. :o   Here's his Yellow Pages poop.

Pete,

It's not the map that's messed up!!  I don't know how I managed to type Paradise in place of Pickford???  Sometimes those senior moments just kind of sneak up on you.

Thanks for the correction - sure would hate to be responsible for someone driving off the end of Whitefish Point looking for the place!

Years back there was a gun shop in Trenary(Trenary Sports btw). Solitary block buliding on the West side of US-41. The owner was a big grumpy guy with a big beard. His son was the "gunsmith". Back in my high school/college days me and a buddy would go down there pretty regular to check it out. They aways had a big selection of used guns. As a matter of fact it was where a bought the first deer rifle of my own. A vintage Savage model 110 LH in .270(for $270.00 Ill never forget that) with an old redfield scope. That got me through my college years hunting and for a bit after. I sold it to a friend I have since lost touch with, I often wonder if he still has it. It was also the place I bought my first hand gun a PPK nock off from Hungrary in .380 which I still have.
What I will always remember about that place was, it didnt matter who walked in that door invedibly either the owner or his son would bring up the subject of "black helocpters" and how they would constantly hover over the shop. Strangely when there were no customers there ha.
Remington model 700 .300WSM, Winchester M-1 Garand 43' .30-06, Inland M-1 Carbine 44' .30 carb, Savage 16LHSS .308Win, Ithaca 16ga, 12ga, 20ga, US&S 43' 1911-A1, S&W 5906, S&W J-frame, among others...
