Topper 158 in 22 Jet, new to me.
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:53:13 AM »
Just got this over the weekend.  Topper 158 in 22 Jet.  Profiled barrel and receiver, in really nice shape.  I thought it was going to be a wall-hanger because I thought the Jet ammo or even brass would be impossible to find.  Turns out that Graf & Sons has Remington brass for $44 a 100 shipped, and PRVI, made in Serbia, for about $12 less.  I have dies, and Sierra manual has data using .223 Hornet bullets.  I'll let you know how it shoots.

Nice rifle! Looks just like my 30-30 Topper. The older Toppers are a pleasure to carry since they're about 2 pounds lighter than a Handi.
Stimpy has some experience with the Jet... you could probably pick his brain for some good info. on it. ;)
Let us know how it shoots.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Here's a little info. I use the 14 grains of ww680 with a .223 jacketed 45 grain bullet. This load in my 22 inch barrel has worked well for me.
(low was 2808 fps, high was 2865 on a ten shot string.) These were with a cci small rifle mag primer. I have loaded this higher,
but it went all over the paper, and I started to see some excess presure signs so i pulled back to where I got the best group.

I also use 11.1 grains of 4759 under a lyman 225415 cast bullet, but I have not checked the velocity on my alpha chronograph.
I am working a load using imr 4198 with a 40 grain jacketed bullet over 13.3 grains of this powder. It seems to shoot well, but the velocity is
not what I wanted as a 5 shot string averaged about 2400 fps.

This little round is still a work in progress, as I have had years of interuption with overseas deployments etc.

These shoot safely in my model 490 topper junior, but always start low and work your way up.

FrogFoot25Try some of these listed in this article. I will when time permits.

good luck.
