I am looking for a product with maximum rust prevention, and something that won't drip down into my action when my guns are in their safe. I was thinking about trying bore butter, but I am weery about its rust prevention capabilities or any downsides I might not know about. Thanks.

I have some firearms that I don't shoot regularly. I have been thinking about something that would be good for long-term storage, also something that would have some retardant qualities for use in smokepoles. I have been checking some that I really cleaned good, after a few weeks I can run a patch through and get more rust. Scares the bejessus outa me.

The problem with after rusting in black powder rifles IS perplexing. I've no positive answer, BUT cleaning is the key. I clean several times about 30 days apart and use boiling hot water with just a bit of dish detergent. To preserve I've had the best luck with cosmoline. It's available at Brownells and is not something thats real easy to remove.. Works though!!
For modern rifles I had good luck with several synthetic greases as well as cosmoline. Again cleaning prior to storage is the key! For modern rifles though I use Sweet's 7.62 and/or a electro-chemical bore cleaner.

As you all know, this subject is at best controversial. Some time back in an on-line search for testing on preservatives for gun steels I came across a product that was testied superior to RIG which has always been regarded as about the best in preserving steel, next to cosmoline. The product............. old -fashioned VASOLINE petrolem jelly.

Now, how to get a black powder bore really clean before storage....that has yet to be determined??? My best efforts have been with Ballistol and/or BreakFreeCLP after using very hot water and dish detergent. Before shooting, a clean patch and blue Windex gets it squeeky clean!

20 years ago I did some testing on what was the best thing to prevent rust. Nails were wire brushed and drove a bit into a 2x4. Then a couple drops of various products were put on the protruding nails. This was then set outside and checked daily to see which rusted first. What ended up best was a mixture of hopes #9 and breakfree. A close second was regular motor oil and the oil from pro-shot. I always leave my bores wet, that is a patch with 8 or 10 drops on it run through the bore. Next take a 1x4 or 1x6 and cut it to fit the inside bottom of your safe, then partially drill 1 inch diameter holes a few inches apart to set the muzzles in. You can then store your rifles muzzle down and not worry about getting oil into the chamber or action. So get all your various products off the shelf grab some nails and try your own test. Don't forget to try the petroleum jelly, grease, wax and what ever. Then let us know in 30 mor 60 days what you have found out.
