45-70 load question

I am loading an H&R 45-70 with 39 grains of Reloader 7 under a Rem 405 grain jacketed soft point, do I need to be concerned about the large amount of empty space in the case? I have a COAL of 2.550, but want to move the bullet out close to a tenth more to match this very long throated barrel. Thanks, JamesIII

No problem.  Lyman lists 31. something with a 400 gr at normal length so you are at 39 so one tenth isn't going to cause any concerns.
Reloader 7 is very forgiving.
When did they start putting a long throat in them.  Mine isn't long throated.

Yep, I use reloader 7 from 34 gr. for trap door level loads to 52 gr. ruger #1 level loads.  Some I know go as high as 56, but I don't need the extra recoil.  lol  My goto load is 350 gr. RNFP with 49 gr. RL7.

if you would like some nice like black powder loads try trail boss that is all i use for target shooting.i can shoot these for hours with no pain.405 cast bullet.

The empty space in the cartridge is only an issue if you are using black powder, or if using smokeless powder AND having ignition issues.

In the old days we put some dacron filler wadding in to hold powder back next to the primer, there were worries of "detonation". I (and everyone else) stopped doing that long ago as it turned out to be unnecessary, just an extra step, time and expense. I use 47 gr of RL 7 under my 300gr HP's, but have used as little as 35gr, and I use 32 gr of 4198 under 385 gr cast, so space is not really a problem unless you are having accuracy problems due to inconsistent ignition.

If your charge is greater than 50%, then yes, you will benefit from adding Dacron or filler to fill the space.  If it is lower then you will have problems.

To repete you will have no trouble using 39 grains of Reloader 7 with a Remington 405 gr bullet seated out a tenth inch more.
Reloader 7 is very forgiving when it comes to air space.  It will not tolerate a huge air space well but at the level you are loading it will be okay.
