Are all the bores that tight
« on: October 10, 2012, 11:53:36 AM »
My father in law had a Huntsman for a few years now and just decieded  to use it this fall. I was helping him break it in, and from the get go it was a  chore to load a sabot and bullet. I used some bore butter on them and it helped some. Are all the huntsmans that  tight ? I doubt I could shoot 3 rounds with out cleaning to load the  forth one. I hate the silly  orange primer carrier  to,  what a pain,  On the  flip side it does shoot really well with two  T7 pelltes  and some T/C  250 shock wave sabot and  bullets. Just kinda hard  for an older  gentleman to load.

I have two Huntsman, and one has a slightly looser bore than the other.  You might want to try to use a load, other than the 250 grain Shock Wave bullets (with yellow sabot), some sabots just fit tighter than others.  If this gets to be too much of a problem, you might consider using Harvester crush rib sabots.

I've been using the T/C Cheap Shots 240gr. all lead hollow points, black sabots.  They are less expensive than the Hornady 240grain XTP bullets, and the point of impact is close enough to not need to re-zero when you change bullets.  Yes, they are a little snug, and yes, they get harder to load after a couple of shots.  You might try to run a spit patch thru the barrel after the third shot, this will remove some of the gunk, and make it a little easier to load.

I recommend that you use a bullet starter, and a range rod.  Using these make it easier to load.  Save the OEM rod for when your hunting.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I just put the sabot in there first, works like a champ. I'll break my rod if I try to load the bullet in the sabot together. Even the EZ load sabots are pretty tight, I need a range rod and a WFN cast slug to seat them together. And the accuracy in my barrel isn't there when I use the EZ load sabots.

I swab after every shot because I'm not here to shoot a ton of lead and I'm too lazy to figure out accuracy over 2-4 shots between swab anyways. Works well for me.

I too use a plinker/hunter combo. I like the barnes 290 TMZ bullet for hunting so I shoot a cast LEE 300 grain 45 cal with the gas check left off to fit the boat tail sabot. Plenty accurate for my needs.

I dont know if it's a bad thing to plunk the yellow boat tail barnes sabot down the bore all by itself then drop the slug on top, but it does work really really well. I just turned the barnes loader down to a diameter sufficient to slip inside the sabot so I dont crush any ribs.

I have one 50 cal. with the same problem, I use mmp 50x451-452 3p-ez, they work great with a cast long colt 310 gr., with 80gr. blackhorn 209 with the baned plug. This is the web site for mmp www.mmpsabots.com, and the do send free samples if you ask. Kernbigo

My 2003 Huntsman, 2004 and 2008 Sidekicks all have .502" bores. Just about perfect for most .50 caliber projectiles and saboted bullets, IMO.
