Quickload Request re:376 Steyr
« on: October 19, 2012, 04:55:03 AM »
Could someone run a sim for me on the 376 Steyr with a 300gr Sierra with a  52000psi max?  I have Load from a Disk, but it uses CUP and doesn't have all the powders I want to see.  From the Hodgdon site, it looks like BL-2C is good at keeping the pressure down.

I'm mulling over a mild wildcat using 45-90 brass.

This is what I want to clone:

Any help is appreciated.

Your exact idea of making a rimmed version of the 376 Steyr came to me about 4 years ago.  I never got around to building a handi barrel for it but earlier this year I did make a shortened 375 H & H formed on 45-100 ( 2.6" ) rimmed brass and built a handi barrel that I call the 375 H & R.  The OAL of the case is 2.625" and is a exact duplicate of the 375 H & H but without the belt and only a .500 dia. case head.
I load it with a 250 gr. bullet to approx. 2400 FPS , Im sure it will do more but this is with H 4350 at about 85 % case capacity and not to bad on recoil.
Heres a pic of it next to a 308 Win.          Jedman

Varget would be my choice with a 300gr bullet, based on a COL of 3.183" which seats the bullet with .375" of the shank in the case, 80gr water capacity, 56gr Varget, 92% density, 52145psi. Mine was reamed with a reamer(PT&G I think) rented from Elk Ridge, it has a very long throat so bullets can be seated longer than in a repeater, factory Hornady ammo is loaded to 58kpsi, I've ran 235gr Speers to 2700fps with no problems in my 22" Handi.  ;)
