How do I take the hammer spur extension off?
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:31:47 PM »
Hi guys :)   How do I take the spur off so I can move it to the other side of the hammer?  Looked like there was a very small allen nut against the hammer?  My smallest allen would not fit inside and it was a .050 I think but tiny.

Thanks for the help!

if it's like mine ( i think they're uncle mike's
brand- been too many years ago) it does
have an allen-head set screw inside. not
sure of the exact size, but it's not a special
or proprietary size. i don't think i have one
here- i'll have to go look.

If it is the allen head that I was seeing inside the hole it was so small that I wonder how you could loosen or tighten it without stripping it out!

Thanks for checking.

well. . . tried to go check my t/c shorty,
does have an allen set screw, but i can't
find my blankety-blanking allen wrenches
to check for size for you.
i'm almost sure it's a 1/16 or 1/32

The Uncle Mikes extensions do have micro allen set screws, usually two of them and they originally came with a blue thread lock on them.   IOW, one was tightened against the hammer, the other against the first screw so it would not looosen - the idea being not having to over tighten them.   Ever meet a Contender Maniac that wasn't a 900 pound gorilla?   So the blue lock compound makes them hard to remove without stripping.  The allens are either .035" or .050" I think (less likely by maybe .060"), not something you're going to buy at your local Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.  I'd still have an extra one to measure if I knew where my old Contender tool kits was now, probably out in storage someplace since I sold off all my Contenders.

I sold/gave 2 or 3 of the UM sets with wrenches to folks here on GBO about 1-2 years ago - don't remember to who for sure though.   Maybe one to Walt (Hopalong) as i gave him some of my other TC parts.

There have been other brands.   Custom shops have also made their own versions.    The UM sets are pretty distinctive though, easy to recognize.

Here's a pic of UM barrel bands and extensions I found still on my computer from when I sold them that may help...

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

If yours is like the ones in Ladobe's picture it should be .0625 or 1/16th inch.  Use a soldiering iron applied to the screw head to heat and melt any thread compound to ease removal.

Not yet :(   I have to find a smaller allen wrench.  Hopefully I will find one this week.

Thank you,

I have 3 of the ones that came from the place you can't mention on this site...

They use 1/16" allen wrench...

Good-luck...BCB
