100 dollar "Frankenslug" gun
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:29:14 AM »
Hey guys, had a buddy who needed some cash and sold me a mossberg 500 12ga whos barrel was pretty beat up. Well i decided it was gonna just be a bedside gun so i cut the barrel off at 19". Well deer season starts next weekend and i was out last weekend and decided to shoot a few slugs out of it for the hell of it. The gun only has the middle bead left on it. At 40 yards with winchester slugs the gun is dead on up and down and one inch to the right.....I shot 5 slugs and the group was no bigger than a golf ball with several touching other holes. Well my local dicks flyer had slugs on sale for 98 cents a box this weekend after rebate so i went and bought 20 boxes of slugs to stock up which cause my brain to start doing odd things. I wanna try to make this a HOME MADE slug gun after deer season. I would first like to remove whats left of the vent rib....has anyone done this before? next I would like to try and port the barrel. I will then add a no gunsmith scope mount to the receiver and a cheap low power scope to this.......Has anyone done anything similar to this? I have 100 dollars into this gun and if for some odd reason ruin the barrel i can buy another barrel......

I like the rib because it gives easy sight options. I just cut the flying  rib end off 1/6 or so in front of the last barrel post. Doesn't look odd to me. Sounds like you have a good start. With a drill press and a bench vice the porting shouldn't be a problem. ear

buy a set of traditions muzzleloader sights for a round barrel and then jb weld them right on there(if you take off the vent rib). I made a slug barrel for 70 bucks this way, bought an old modified barrel, cut it down to 19" and then jb the sights on an voila! Held 4-5" groups at 100 with them irons on it.  And you can drill and tap a mossy receiver no problem. Go to your nearest "gun stuff" store and buy a cheap one piece base and get the correct drill/tap set for the screws that come with the base(usually 6-24 or maybe 8-24). Make sure you disassemble that action completely first. Be careful on the tap operation since the receiver is aluminum.
