smoothbore results
« on: October 30, 2012, 01:16:00 AM »

I took my 62 cal. smoothbore out to the range to try and tighten up my groups. I have been shooting to the right of my target and the first 4 shots yesterday were no different, they just made it on my target outside the black circle. I did feel myself flinching so I dry fired several times using a piece of wood instead of my flint.  So I settled down and followed through on my next 4 shots, all ended up in the black circle. I just need to keep shootin this smoothie. I think the slightly bent barrel isn't as bad as I thought and I will just leave it be. The target was at 30 yds using 70gr. 3F and a .60 ball with a .020 ox yoke patch.

Looking plenty potent for game out to that range, how was recoil@ 70gr.?  Was that group w/ open sights or just a bead? Looking real forward to slinging some huge roundballs myself soon, as you found, its going to be a challenge. Just curious IB, aren't you on the gta airgun site also? J

I don't feel the recoil much at all, having a wide butt plate helps. I only have the front bead for sight, it makes for a real challenge. I am not on the gta airgun site. But I am Johnny Reb on the huntchat forum.  :)

Lol I felt the vibe brother:-). Also glad to hear your getting that kinda accuracy with your bead, i'm hoping mine can do the same. Taking a doe for the freezer with the BP 12 bore is definitely on my list for next year, do you plan on hunting with yours?  J

So far i'm using a .50 white Mt. carbine with 370gr tc maxi's. I've had 5 hunts with it since the season opener. A very kind gbo member has a scissor mold in .690 on the way to me now and if I can get the balls to track straight from my new to me TC New Englander 12ga. I'm wary of cracking the stock on the old NE'er, its serial number 400 and something and doesn't have a machine screw through the tang like later models. I'm going to start with 60gr triple seven and chrony that big roundball. It really needs 800fps or more to retain enough energy to humanely take a deer imho, so i'll adjust accordingly to find a good charge in terms of recoil, energy and accuracy enough for close range deer. I also plan on using a .50 air rifle once our gun season opens. It shoots .495 balls(no patch) with extreme accuracy out to 40 yards or so. It however is a rifled bore. My plan for a 2'nd smootbore is to either purchase a white mountain carbine barrel and have it bored to a cly. smoothbore in .54, I think or pick up a Pietta 12 sxs thats at a local dealer. Even though i'm looking forward to using rb's in my guns, I also want to try buckshot, pumpkins balls and mixed shot sizes. Just to see what happens:-)
