My new Axis
« on: May 07, 2013, 02:36:22 AM »
Now this is the first ever Savage rifle I have owned.  It was far too good a deal to pass up, being a bolt action in 30-06 with a camoflage stock and detachable magazine, and she is just a sweetie.  The trigger felt a bit stiff (around 4-5 lbs) but crisp, until I worked the bolt a couple of dozen times and I can really appreciate the slim pistol grip.  I am pretty amazed at the strength and sturdiness of the synthetic stock because I have not been impressed at all with previous examples I have handled, so I am pretty darn happy with this new $325 purchase.

I have yet to sling it and install scope bases and a scope but that will all come together this week.  Don't get me wrong, I like my Winchesters and my M70 is (or maybe was...) definately my all time favorite but this Axis is really something else.  Ah well, I guess I'm back to handloading my 06s now, rather than my 8mms, 444s and 303 Brits.  Good thing I have a friend with a Garand who doesn't reload.........

Hey Congrats, they ARE a sweet rifle and i know just what you mean about the feel, everything on them just feels "right" to me, i honestly couldn't see spending a penny more on anything else after picking mine up($256.00 walmart). If i decide on a bolt varminter i'll be buying another one. Watch which scope\mounts you choose, unless you get offset mounts you'll need a long scope tube.  J

I also have one, see my field report listed in this forum. You will like yours too, I am sure. It will not take the place of a fine rifle, but you just can not beat the price/value.

I really like the weight of the rifle. It is light so I can tote it around without getting tired. It is surprisingly accurate too. I bought mine for less than $300, including 7% sales tax. You will likely want to get the extended mounts for your rifle, the distance between the mounts is long. Also watch the height of your rings, so the bolt will clear the scope without interference. I put on a Rifle Basix trigger on mine and it makes it a very nice rifle, the plastic stock it came with will stay on it, because i like the light weight, that will get bumped up if I put a wood stock on it.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback.  I will try and wring it out this month, being careful of the scope bases and scope height.  The trigger is still heavier than I have on any of my other rifles but crisp and I will have to see how she prints with a scope.  I'm hoping she shoots with heavy handloads - I will try factory duplication loads first but I like the heavier loads for heavier game and may take this one hog huntin', although I am not adversed to using heavy loads on northern Whitetail.

Savage gives you a target with the package that comes with the rifle and asks you to give them your best shot.  I hope to impress them, and myself in the process......... wish me luck.....................

Mikey,

I recently bought an Axis in .223 and it can hold 1/2MOA off the bench with my friends handloads. ( report in another post on this forum) This gun is the most accurate out of box gun I have ever owned. I did do a trigger job on it because, like you I found the trigger to be a bit heavy but crisp. Easy to do and made me very happy

OK the only reason I have not bought "my new axis" is I cant decide caliber. And Mikey, this isn't helping! Let us know how it shoots and  so I can be additionally paralyzed.

I recently saw one in 308 that was factory threaded for a silencer, does anyone know how much that would cost? Can you order the barrel separately ? It looked to be from the factory though, that would have to be special order would it not?? Has anyone here seen one like that ??

i bought axis 30.06 stainless Saturday .got scope mounted had to use higher rings the factory rings were to low .also did a trigger job on it has smoother trigger now. it kicks pretty good using 150 grn bullets had one box of those i used to sight then used 125 gr reloads much better. it seemed to me you could only shoot about 4 shoots then the grouping would spread. i was getting about 2 1/2'' at 100 yards not bad but im going to work the trigger a little more and trim spring . i also filled the stock with silicone.i don't like that hollow sounding stock it feels a little heavier but not much.this gun would be a peach in 22-250 if it shoots nice. :)

I bought 2 last fall when cabelas had them on sale for $259 for the package. Rifle & weaver scope. I bought a 243 and gave it to my grandson. And a 223 for myself, but then my youngest daughter wanted it so I gave it to her.

Maybe they will run a sale again this year.

I use Savage rifles..love the accutrigger.  However, some come without the Accutrigger.
Last one I bought was a Model 93 in .17 HMR.

There it was as passed by the gun display in Walmart.  A heavy barrel, 17HMR with a beautiful press-checkered wood stock!  When the man said $199...I said SOLD!

I found one reason why it may have sold far under MSRP, is because it had no Accutrigger.  No problem, i took out the trigger assy, and mailed it to my Grandson in Missouri.

It came back to my specs for a trigger  (32-36 oz) breaks clean and tidy...more than happy with it !
