22 mag question
« on: August 24, 2012, 12:31:34 AM »
Hi All,

Is it okay to rechamber a 22 LR to 22 Mag? (handi single, not a repeater gun) Friend asked me and I don't know squat about rimfires except they are hard to reload. ::)

That would be fine on that platform. Even though the specs say the bore/groove may be a tad tighter it wont matter, and may even shoot better, given the manufacturing tolerances (we know stuff isnt always to spec).
BTW, You dont want to do this on old single shots, like Stevens Favorites, etc., they WILL shoot loose!

It'll work fine as long as a rifle reamer is used as opposed to a cylinder reamer and the reamer pilot must fit the bore, there are a bunch of Versa Pak owners here that have 22 Mag VP barrels.  ;)

BB,
We just had 2 Sportster barrels rechambered to 22 Mag.  Very pleased with the results. :) :)   They BOTH now shoot better as Magnums than as LR. ;D   I too was concerned about the bore size difference, however after reading about MspRet's favorable results rechambering his Versa-Pak barrels, we gave it a try.  If ya give flemc1 a shout on PM he can tell you the ammo he used to test  both of our barrels  AND the contact information for the "smith" in Idaho he used.  Which by the way was the hands down best price.  Even less expensive that doing it myself.  I have found the Win white box (WallyWorld) to be a stellar performer thus far.

The only issue I can think of would be is (like Tim said) use the Rifle reamer, and be very careful when cutting the rim.  There is aprox 0.012 inches difference in diameter and 0.007 inches difference in rim thickness.  The Magnum having the larger dimensions.  Hand reaming that slight difference can be tricky.

keep em talkin' while I reload

I had this done several years ago, happy wih the results! The gunsmith set it up for using Winchester ammo, said there IS a difference in rim thickness. Very accurate with Winchester Super X 40 grain JHP, other ammo not even close. I really like the regular barrel as opposed to a bull barrel, much lighter on a long walk! Good Luck!
