notch chamber mouth?
« on: October 26, 2012, 06:26:50 AM »
Seems I recall reading somewhere about cutting a small notch at the edge of the chamber to allow prying out a stuck case if need be. It sounded like a good idea but I haven't tried it. I get an occasional failure to eject but am at the range and can use a rod to knock it out. Out in the boonies a rod may not be a good way to go, especially if you're in a hurry. Notch good?

At best I think 'notching' a barrel chamber is silly!

Never heard of that before.

Alledgedly back in the day Custer was getting his azz kicked and command wiped out, the ammo the army used in 1876 might indeed jam or get stuck in their guns.  But that was 15 decades ago and ammo nowadays is much better!

If on the other hand you were using a chamber adapter (this idea crossed my mind when I opened this thread), marking a chamber mouth might be okay if you were indexing the adapter with whatever barrel you might have.  ;)

I'll post a pic later on what Larry did on the stub barrels he has built.

I have never needed it on the 32/20 but did once on the 25-35. Both where ejectors I converted to extractors. (NON mechanical adjantage.)

My "Trotter Special" .32-20 is the same as CW's.  It is also converted to extractor.  I too have not had to use the notch on that barrel, but have had other ejectors that didn't have the notch when I needed it.

Fred M's ejector notch link has been in the FAQs since 2004, it's been discussed many, many times, not necessary on an extractor barrel tho, right Pete!!!   ;D I have one barrel with it, my 35 Rem cuz I loaded the cast bullets into the lands, and ejector wouldn't remove a loaded round, it's since been converted to an extractor!

If I was going deep in the bush or on an expensive hunt trip I'd notch a spot (likely 3:00 for right handed) and have a matching small 'keyring' screwdriver handy when out. For everyday, 'it ain't gonna matter much' I havent done it, but I have had some agrivating hang ups enough to think about it while walking back to the shop for a rod.

I did the notch with my shorty 45-70 ejector. It does work well. I put the notch at 3 o'clock and haven't looked back. It beats carrying a cleaning rod.

You wouldn't think it was silly if you had a stuck case and nothing to knock it out with. ;)
I've never needed the notch in my Trotter Special 32-20 either but it's nice to know it's there just in case.
