Hurricane Sandy casualties?
« on: October 31, 2012, 05:06:08 AM »
I'm reading that 55 died in the US, attributable to the hurricane. That seems really high for a storm with just some flooding, beach house damage, and a few fires. Most of the damage happened right near the beach, so everyone near it should have evacuated.

Do you happen to know what caused this large number of fatalities? It seems like some training is in order to prevent these needless deaths.

Have not heard for sure but most of the fatalities related to storms such as this are due to heart attacks, exposure, drownings (usually in their vehicles when they try to drive threw moving water), electrical shock from downed wires, etc.

Unfortunately common sence is not all that common and people do dumb things especially in stressful situations.   For example;  many people will walk right into a flooded basement not thinking that there could be live electrical wires in the water.  As mentioned above people will try to drive threw flooded streets and get swept away and drown not understanding how powerful moving water is.
