Reduced powder chamber & DOM tube wall?
« on: October 30, 2012, 03:14:21 AM »
Hi all

After lots of reading and study I am goin to build my first cannon. I have a couple of cannons now from hmr that Ed made me (beutiful) made of solid steel. I want to build a DOM Tube one with a removable theeaded breach plug.  The bore of the tube is .810 and a wall of 3/8".  I am going to sleeve that tube at the chamber area with another DOM tube with a 3/8 wall and shrink fit the two with heat and cold. I would like to have a removable threaded plug 7/8-14 fine thread 2.5" deep. I was thinking powder charges of no more than like 100 to 150grains of 1f. Any reasons why this wouldn't work?
Lastly the DOM tube pieces I have are made to ANSI 519 spec made of 1119 steel. The only thing I don't like is the 1119 steel. It is not gummy like 1018 it is a little more brittle from what I see. Spec should be good to at least 70,000 psi. I could heat treat the steel too but don't want to.
Any thoughts???  THX!!
