Help with rust blue humidity cabinet.
« on: October 31, 2012, 01:26:02 AM »
The temp has dropped to the mid 40s at night and the humidity is ranging from 20%-70%.  Rust bluing isn't going so good now. I built a box and installed a 60 watt light bulb and a can full of water.  The humidity in the box is lower than the outside air.  Do I need mote heat.  The inside of the box is around 88 degrees.

As I mentioned in your other thread, per the encouragement from Gunnut69 I poured some water in bottom of 55 gallon barrel. Hung a 75 watt light in it with the gun parts and covered with an old window pane then put a blanket over the top as insulation..Have now done three guns in it .Works real fast..Rust blued the last one in just 4 cycles over two days...Think you have too small surface area with your water.Try pans or multiple buckets of water....Course I have relatively little experience so better advice may come from somebody else and I would defer to their counsel.

Is the bulb under the pan of water? Insulating the cabinette will help avoid condensation drops which are really bad for the process.. Increasing the heat will allow the air to carry more moisture, heating the water (bulb under the pan) will increase evaporation.. Remember too much can also cause real problem...

if you're using a good size
water pan , put a quart jar
or something similar in the
middle and drape a wet cotton
terry cloth towel over it so that
it acts as a wick.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I accidentally spilled some water in the bottom of my wood box and the humidity shot up.  I also added a rag to act as a wick.  I think I figured out my problem.  The water was having a hard time evaporating out of the pan or the wood was soaking up a lot of moisture.
