Another not-so-safe looking cannon video
« on: October 26, 2012, 06:13:03 AM »
Came across this video on Youtube and it's quite scary stuff.
"Cannon" made of some tubing or other, 1" walls for 2.5" bore..
Unsafe loading procedures etc..
Flimsy carriage breaks to pieces upon firing and sends parts flying..

I like his last words:  "Don't try any of this at home unless yer a trained perfeshunal."

Also notice the way he has his whole head in front of a loaded cannon, then his whole body.

And he tells us about he "say-bott."

I don't even know where to start.  First sign of a gross overload or poorly built carriage or both is when the builder runs like hell to get away from it when the fuse is lit.  The second sign is having to look for the carriage parts after the gun fires.  The third sign would be looking for parts of the barrel, which fortunately for these guys didn't happen.

I like how he puts his face in front of it all the time. He loads it then walks down range to set up his target while at the same time making himself a target.  This is the kind of person who really makes me sick. If you don't know not to stand in front of a loaded cannon then you don't need to play with one.

I blame it on the kids father. Kids dad must hate him.

Does it look like the breach is around 1/4 inch thick?  That vent hole is sure to the rear.

The Tamping rod used, looked as if the end to push in the powder charge was made of metal. That is not good, however the whole shooting of the cannon was NOT GOOD.  He should be banned from this site if he is on here.

Doc>I noticed you commented on his video also. This guy (kid) really needs to make an effort to become safety consious before he hurts himself and/or others. When he walked in front of the cannon AFTER loading and setting the fuse I almost couldn't watch the rest. I was horrified (had that sick feeling in my gut) that any moment something was going to go bad wrong. Its to bad others kids see this and want to do the same...........................................................

How about vigorously ramming the projectile AFTER pricking the foil powder charge and setting the fuse.  Not to mention homemade fuse (talcum powder?????)

How would like to of been standing where this kid was when the cannon went off. An over sized vent hole could have let a spark in and boom this kid is dead.

Also looks like a huge hole in the barrel after it rolls over.

Is it standard practice to put a  block behind the trail. Could this be why it blew off?

I think thats the good ol Duct tap rammer he's using thar...... don't worry soon he'll figure out he needs to re-enforce the cannon so he can use heaver charges..... being a professsonal..... he'll wrap the whole thing up in Duct tap......... some day someone will be posting a thread where this dope made the newspapers.......

The block on the trail has no bearing on failure.  Does anyone see any trunnions?

If it had trunnions they weren't on it after it was fired.  Notice that the barrel rolled on the pavement which would not have happened if the trunnions were in place.

A lot of times people experience the benefit of learning from their mistakes and enjoy living a safer life as the result.  Not so with this rube as the mistakes he is doing (if gone wrong) would not allow him to survive another day to have learned a thing.  Being self taught is an admirable thing, but when dealing with things/items that have the potential to kill you or put you in a wheelchair the rest of your life (missing one to four limbs), it's a very stupid thing.  He probably learned his "skills" from a fellow idiot friend and like someone has already posted, other kids seeing this video will want to blast something themselves and the Darwin cycle continues with or without them.  Smithy.
Salvation is through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in Him alone.
