My lath is is just alittle to small
« on: November 01, 2012, 12:20:06 PM »
I picked up a Shilen barrel prefit for a Savage in 243 with an 8 twist. It`s a bull barrel 26 in. long and just would not fit in my lathe. Thank heavens for friends. I put it on his lathe and opened up the chamber to a 6-284. I have an E. R. Shaw 30 in. barrel coming in that I`m going to chamber in 6 - 300 WSM. As soon as I get it and chamber it I`ll those 2 and a 224 TTH barrel I`ll send them all off to get Nitrated. Thing will get busy around here after the first of the year.  ;)

That is the problem with those bench top machines.  They put a 3/4" spindle bore in them.  They really need at least 1 1/2"

An 1 1/2 spindle bore also allows for installing a drawbar type 5-C collet closer which is perfect for working small parts up to inch dia ..I keep one of my lathes setup all the time with collet closer and use it probably half the time or better...and then also use the collets in couple  other machine accesories..Indespensible in my own shop.
