Planning to buy my first Henry

I'm thinking of buying a lever gun I really want a Henry. Not sure if I should get a .22, .22mag, or a .17 to plink with or something bigger. I'd like to have something to take on a hog hunt this fall maybe a .44. Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions.If I did get the small cal to plink I could borrow a gun for the hog hunt.

My H001T 22Lr is a fun irons sights plinker in a grown up size.
I have experieced a problem common with Henrys; they use a lot of ammo.

If it was me I'd borrow a rifle for the hog hunt and get a good .22 first.  You can't beat a Henry on a cost/quality basis.  The H001T is a very good looking/shooting rifle.  For me my H001Y (Youth) is just the ticket for my wood walking/camping uses. TheYouth model is really a compact rifle for adults as the length of pull (stock) is about the same as a Win 94 or 62A and with a weight of just 5 1/4 lbs/ 33 1/2 inches long it's a great carry rifle.  Get the .22 first!

Practice makes perfect. A 22 LR a must have to me and was my first choice in a Henry. Then I went crazy and bought four more. They are my new favorite lever gun maker and have displaced Marlin in my book (my previous favorite maker).

If for some reason ya can only have one it should be a 22LR. It's cheaper to shoot by far and therefore will get more use. Borrow a rifle for the hunt and buy another when you can afford it.

My Henry is a 22LR with octagon barrel. It's a darn nice looking gun and would be an excellent choice for you.

I've not been limited to just one gun since I was a young teenager and have multiples of most everything. Everyone should own a 22 rimfire.

looks like I should start with the .22. That would be a good fathers day present and then maybe a 44 for christmas  ;D

That's the right plan.  EVERYONE needs a 22, 'bout all anyone can afford to shoot any more if you don't reload.  I have 3 of the rimfire Henrys, the standard H001, the Oct. barrel 22 and a 22 mag.  All are very good shooters with their preferred ammo, with actions smooth as a babies butt.  We have a couple of the 30-30's in the store I just started working in, they look pretty nice.  They come with XS sights installed, very nice touch, and a great sighting system.  I find the "brass" frames are heavier than I want to carry, so stick with the blued frames.  DP

I guess that the way everyone is talking that quality/fit/finish has gone way up on these Henry's since I first saw them at a Dealer's Show in Ohio (AccuSport).  At that time they resembled some of the cheap pot-metal bb guns I have had in the past as far as their appearance.  Glad to hear that this American-made company has improved.

I just recently purchased a lever rifle Navy Arms in 45 Colt. The big problem is after getting I wanted to run lots of ammo through it! To do that would mean lots of time reloading or a big expense buying! So I went and picked up a new Goldenboy Henry in 22L.R. They ARE A HIGH QUALITY rifle. Ever trip to the range the Henry is one rifle that gos. Depending on your budget I would suggest the 22L.R. as you will want to run a lot of ammo through it.

I`ve got the H001 scoped with a 3-9x40 bushnell, Love it a pure joy to shoot and look at too. Then I`ve got  the 30-30 Brass/octagon with iron sights, It`s a bit of a bruiser but hey just had to have one. Plan to get one of the frontier .17 HMR`s also one of the Big Boy deluxe`s in .357mag.
