Action opening when shot
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:59:56 AM »
I was at the range today tweeking my Contender 44 mag first 2 shots the  action came open when it went off. I checked to see if was closed after the first one. Recoil was not out of the ordinary no problems after that what gives.

Unless you are shooting very hot loads, it sounds like a locking bolt problem.  Have you tried switching out the bolts from another barrel?

I had a 10" 223 barrel that was doing that. The shells were tearing in half at the web and the back half would be blown out as the barrel came unlocked. T.C. replaced the locking lugs and the frame.

I don't think they were loaded too hot I load middle range stuff. I fired about 5 more rounds with no problem hope it holds together next week, buck season in WV.

any chance that your offhand was near the trigger guard ?years ago when i first started shooting contenders i would put my offhand on the forearm and found that i was leting my offhand slide backunder recoil and would just hit the trigger guard and cuase it to open also i would make sure the area in the frame where the action locks up is clean

I had that issue with a 7mmTCU barrel. I replaced the locking lug spring and that solved it for me.
