OK, many of us own ruger #1's in 45/70 with the 22" barrels. I believe lipsey's or one of the other distributors has come out with the new ruger #1 with a 26" yes that's right a 26" barrel on the 45/70. Supposedly there are only 400 to be made. So after years of many folks here on this forum and on other forums writing in to go with a longer
barrel they finally did it. So now instead of a single shot rifle with 22" carbine barrel we now can get a real single shot rifle in 45/70 with a 26" long barrel. I've seen the pics and it looks like a God honest rifle with the longer barrel. And yes I have a #1 45/70 with the 22" bbl. OK rant off for now. I'll be good and take my meds before I go to bed. The 26" barrel looks funny to me. I prefer the 22". An extra 4" for maybe a 50fps gain just isn't worth the extra weight and aggravation IMO. I have a #3 and a !1 with the 22" barrel in .45-70. The long barreled versions are available so they must not have sold that well.

I'm with Swampy on this one (and GB as well!) I have #1 with a 22" barrell and it's pretty handy. I think a 26" barrel on that caliber is wasted as well....just my opinion.

I like my #1S 45-70 with a 22" barrel. I also like my 24" Encore 45-70 and my 30" Pedersoli rolling block. I have different rifles for different targets, they are all fun!

Thanks for the replies. Always thought the #1 45/70 looked more like a carbine with the 22" bbl. Not looking to stir up a fire here. Just liked the looks with the longer bbl. Frank

I kinda do too Frank. I've owned a few .45-70s mostly single shots but one Marlin and all had 26" or longer barrels most longer. I seem to recall a couple had 32" barrels.

Graybeard, there was a show on the outdoor channel with Craig Boddington or a article in either handloader or rifle magazines. He had I believe a #3 action with a long barrel in 30-40 krag. Custom rifle done in the english style. Beautiful rifle. I have seen a few ruger #1's done up with longer barrels, both octagon and round. Think the longer bbls look nice and you really aren't giving up much due to the length of the action. Frank

Before the accountants realised that shorter was cheaper and set the marketing boys on the customers rifles came with 24"-26" barrels as the norm. Now of course shorter is the fad or fashion and a lot of punters have been brain washed into thinking they are better

like injection moulded bits and stocks.

Nope they are just cheaper and make more profit not better.

Me I happen to think a 25" barrel not only looks good but also balances nicely. Short barrels belong in "Stutzen" or as Americans call them "Mannlicher" stocks full graceful wood to the muzzle

I have the 26" barreled No 1 from Lipseys. I love it, and sold my 22" barreled 1S after I purchesed the newer one.
The barrel is not only longer, but a heavier weight barrel, more like the tropical 1H rifles. The gun is much more pleasant to shoot with that extra weight. They are also stocked in Circassian Walnut.

The only issue I have noticed so far is that they have a short throat. I had to trim my brass shorter than normal in order to chamber the 405 gr Laser Cast Bullets I have on hand. I am going to order some bullets from Montana Bulletworks that have a shorter nose to crimp groove and give them a try.

A longer forend would have been an improvement. A set screw in the foreend hanger would have been a huge improvement accuracy wise.

I've reached the age that an enclosed ground or treestand is required. A long rifle is NOT the best way to go in confined spaces.

Guess I've had my share of 26" Ruger #1 and even a Browning A-Bolt with a 26" tube.

Way back I bought a used #1B which someone had cut to 22". I thought about that buy for awhile but once I had it and had used it, I was in love.

Now with my RUGER #1S - 45/70 I'm back in love. Great rifle! handles GREAT in the woods and brush. Light fast and my 465gr WFN cast at 1600 - 1700fps are totally awesome on deer and elk. No way would I want to change it.

Three deer and 2 elk so far all with cast boolits, and two deer tags yet to fill for this year, what's not to like

Now, if that level of velocity is on the short/low side for some, well I can assure you that I can put that 465gr boolit out the tube a lot faster then you want to hang on too. Way faster!

I'd love to have a full set of the 22" Ruger #1 rifles, and the only thing I'd change is to replace that ugly Alexander Henry forearm groove with a nice piece of contrasting walnut or ebony.

There folks we have a rifle with true class!

Mine No. 1 45-70 is 24 years old, was given to me when I retired. It joined several other 45-70s. It has accounted for a lot of deer here in Wisconsin. It just loves a 350 RN from Hornady, three other friends also shoot this load in their No. 1s are more than satisfied. One of them just took a bear in Ontario that field dressed over 400 lbs. and was aged at over 20 yrs. with 1 shot from his No. 1 and the 350 RN. If I want to shoot a long barrel I take my Sharps Borchert Model 78 out with BP and cast bullets. Rifle is over 130 yrs. old and still a joy to shoot.

have the stainless Ruger #1 in 45-70 and have to say i like the shorter barrel. love shooting this thing. Extremely accurate and love the kick. you know your shooting a big bullet!

I have 2 No.1S .45-70 with 22" barrels - they are nice but I would LOVE to get a 26" version !! I have the older No.1S - 26" barrels in 7mm Rem Mag and .338 Win Mag and they are my favorites (along with my No.1RSI in 7x57mm). Now I just have to find the $$ for the 26" .45-70.
