Old Cast Iron Field Cannon Black Powder Load?
« on: June 20, 2012, 06:45:16 PM »
:o I have an Old Cast Iron Cannon Replica of Civil War Field Piece. I got this from a large collection in 1975. It is a Professionally Manufactured Cannon.
The Elevation Spindle, Brass, is Marked 300gr. I have NEVER Fired This Before. This is a Massive Heavy Piece - Weighs about 40-50 pounds.
What Grade Black Powder is Recommended or Suggested for my Cannon? Fg? FFg or ??
THANKS! ps. I was directed to this site by member 'Doc Holliday'  8)

How about posting a picture for starters?  We can't help much without knowing more about your barrel.

During the past century, thousands of "decorator" cannons have been manufactured, which were never intended for firing even with blanks.  Often the makers would protect themselves by not drilling a vent, or putting in a partial vent that did not connect to the bore.  Over time people have drilled the vents through or modified them in various ways so they could fire them.   One of the first things we'd probably want to determine is whether the item you have was originally intended for firing safely or not.

Another category of cannon is the salute cannon, of which tens if not hundreds of thousands have been made.  These were intended for noisemaking only, not for firing a projectile, and we'd want to see if what you have might be one of those.

:) WoW! First - Thanks to All Who've Replied. 1.) I have completely removed All Brass Fitments & Sandblasted my Cast Iron to the bare metal. 2.) There is a Series of Numbers separated by dashes on the Bottom of the 'Carriage' and on either side of the Numbers there are what look like Sideways 'T' with 2 - little 'Triangles' on the Bar of the 'T'. 3.) I have covered the 'Serial /Model/Number' with clear coat, and am almost done Painting everything. 4.) the Cast Iron Wheels have Ten (10) Spokes in each wheel 5.) there is an Original Vent/Fuse Hole that goes through to the barrel 6.) I believe this Is a Signal Cannon 7.) I will 'Attempt' to post some pics later today & I will post the exact dimensions as well.
Once again - THANKS!! This is a GREAT RESOURCE! And I Never would have found this alone (I'd Already done Numerous Google Cannon Searches in attempt to Figure Out What I Have) It finally Dawned on me to ask my new friend 'Doc Holliday' who was EXTREMELY Helpful & Advised me to check out this site, where I would find 'EXPERTS' who would assist me in Staying Safe!! If All Goes Well - I Will have my Cannon re-assembled and (I HOPE) ready to SAFELY ''''BOOOOM'''' on the 4th of July!  ;D

Does your cast iron cannon have a steel bore liner?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Welcome to the Forum!

40 or 50 pounds  is not a lot of weight for a cannon things we need to know are the following:
Length?
Bore Dia. ?
diameter at muzzel?
Diameter at breach?
as mentioned steel bore liner?
Vent location and size of hole?
And yes photos will help ... if you need help posting photos there are people here who can help.
.
all of this has to do with safe construction we would hate to find out you had a nice looking
cannon that turned into a pipe bomb.......

Hi Oldcannon1969, Welcome to the forum.

Cast iron does not do well with "shock loading" the porosity of the metal tends to make it fragile.  If you can hang the barrel from a rope, and hit it with a rawhide mallet, or a heavy piece of wood.  If it rings like a bell proceed with further investigation, if it does not have a clear ringing tone, NEVER consider shooting it.

This is an old thread that never got finished.  For any one happening upon it, please note if the cannon rings like a bell, does not mean it's safe to shoot...

Even it it does not ring that doesn't mean it is unsafe to shot....as Keith warns, continue investigating...
