No Muskrats
« on: November 15, 2012, 05:58:52 AM »
Had a first ever for me trapping Muskrats. We knew it was going to be a bad serason with not much sign. Boy and I went out Monday and it was worse than I thought. We struggled to find a place to go with the 48 traps we got out. We had hope to get all 80 we are allowed out but there was just no way. Of the 48 we got out 8 were coon set the rest rat sets. So Tuesday check was the first time in my years of trapping that I got skunked. I've never set rat traps even if it was as few as 4 that I didn't have at least one rat the next day and at least on first night there set. So I got a 0 with 19 rat sets, did get 1 coon from my 6 Dps. My son Squeeked out 3 rats and one coon out of his 21 rat sets and 2 Dps. So it was no big surprise when we picked all the traps back up Wednesday that we each only had 1 rat. So two days 48 sets grand total 5 rats 2 coon. Normal year with same amount of traps (40) we would have probably 20 some rats the first night. Everyone we ran into and talked to was looking at empty traps. I talked to Fish & Wildlife folks and no one knows anything or seems to care about the low numbers. I almost feel guilty now that we killed the 5 rats we did. Next year  we probably won't bother spending the $30.00 each for a permit to go on the river.

Yes not fun to find that little sign. I have my line zoned into about 7 sections or layouts. My first 4 were about normal or just a bit slow on rats but down about 30% on coons. Typically those four areas give me about 120 rats and I was at about 100. The last 3 zones were way, way off. Last 5 year average is about 40-50 rats this year 16. Coon numbers were off by about 50% as well. I have 3 smaller zones to go and may just let them rest and let the population come back. I have no idea what the sign is in those areas as of now.
Last year I caught 230 rats in the area that this year I caught about 155.  One stream that last year yielded 16 gave me 1 rat in three checks with 19 rat sets.

Funny thing this year im are slaying the rats in ponds i trapped before with body grips and footholds and never got the nbrs like this year.  With colony traps  its two days and out.  One  pond had 8 rats in one colony, 6 in another and 5  each in two others.  This pond usually only yielded five or so rats with body grips..   another thing  hardly any rat sign at all on the pond with all the rats.   Have other ponds that are really producing also with colony traps.... sure glad  Wi   approved them.... Coon are coming in mostly from DPs and they are xl and larger.   Some nice 4 x lg  no 5xs like ND though.
