Just wonder how many are out there ?
My ancestor that participated in "The War" was captured and died as a POW at Camp Salmon P. Chase ,Columbus OH, from dysentery caused by the unsanitary conditions and poor diet.
He rode with Company A ,3rd Battalion ,Kentucky Mounted Rifles, an attachment of John Hunt Morgans command. This fact is a little ironic as I now live in the state, county and town in which he raided.
He was a blacksmith by trade from the area of Falmouth KY , having southern ties made him a target for night riders, shooting through the walls of his home endangering his family and killing his livestock ,so he decided to "take the war to the north" joining the CSA at Monticello KY, when he heard Morgan had formed a mounted unit.
Morgans "Great Raid" crossed the Ohio River at Brandenburg KY aboard two commandeered steamers, burning one and into Indiana, skirmishing with home guards, sacking and burning as it ran through Indiana to the IN OH state line above and west of Cincinatti, then on toward WV,where the largest part of the unit was eventually captured crossing the Ohio back into KY.
Just wondering how many of you KY ,Southern IN, IL ,boys have southern ties and would like to hear your stories.
