45-70 guestion (I Think its time)
« on: November 15, 2012, 01:59:48 AM »
well after shooting and enjoying my 20 guage ultra slug i started looking yesterday at the trapdoor loads. The 300 grain loads would fit and have basically the ability to load identical to the sabot round or go up from there. The big difference is at about 1/3 the price of the sabots and that is when on sale so rolling my own is the main reason to get it. I wanted to see i know they make 22" with open sights and drilled and tapped but I want a 24" I see they make it in a stainless but do they offer it in a blued barrel also. I like they extra weight of my heavy ush Im not a stalker i am a lazy sit in my stand kind of guy. also it knocks down a little of the recoil. also these loads are low pressure so can it go on an sb1 or is an sb2 the only way to go to save my face from becoming seperated from my body.

Unfortunately the only 24" 45-70 barrel is the SS Ultra unless you cut a BC barrel down!  :o The rest are 22" (or 18¾" Trapper w/sights if you can find one). SB1 works fine with trapdoor loads.

i chronographed  my 45-70   with the same  factory ammo
before and after  it went from  22'' to 16''
it  lost about 100 fps

the same ammo also shot the same  in the other barrel.....a 24'' stainless
24 = 22

whats wrong with $tanle$$??
why  not just go with the 22 inch barrel??

i would just buy a complete gun  on the sb2 frame

If you are a "lazy guy" and stay on stand, want more weight, and blued barrel, the answer is obvious........ just go ahead and get a BC barrel. It is blue. The heaviest barrel made,  (I think, overall weight) and with 10 (YES TEN) inches more, the velocity should go UP 150 fps.  ;)

I like my SS UH proportions and handling very much, though my wood is the conventional buttstock, not the thumbhole. The matt stainless is non reflective too, so probably less visible than a semi shiny blue. It looks good with a scope on it whereas a BC wouldnt to my eye (but so what if it hits where you are looking!).
