55grain FMJ load for AR-12
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:54:07 AM »
My son just bought an AR-15 so I bought the dies and etc. to load 223. I bought 1000 55 grn FMJ's. What powder charge would be good? Varget, BL-C2 look like good metering with good ballistics and would be decent in 30-06 and 308 as well. I don't have either powder on hand so I'm wide open on powder. May buy a keg of what ever I wind up with.

What does your loading manual say???  Can't wrong with 25gr of Varget though.....

25.0 grs 2230 works like match ammo. 25.0 grs H335 is right behind it. I'd avoid the Varget with the lighter 55gr bullets in a 223. A lot of the guys are seeing buildup of deposits at the end of the neck in the throat and accuracy is suffering. In a lot of cases, the deposits are not coming out even with a brush and solvent. The barrel is ruined. Doesn't seem to be an issue with bullets 62gr and heavier. The 2230 and H335 will meter like water as they are a fine ball powder.

The 2 powders that I have found to work very well with 55g bullets are BLC-2 and Ramshots TAC , both meter great and shoot nice groups from both my Handi as well as my Stevens 200 .
