Timney trigger for the Mosin
« on: August 25, 2012, 01:32:04 AM »
Has anyone tried one of these? The stock trigger isn't all that great and I'm thinking my shooting will improve with a better trigger.
Does anyone else make a better trigger for the Mosin?

Isn't all that great??? That is by far the worse trigger my finger has ever squeezed. I haven't put a timney in mine yet, but I've heard others do it and of course it is awesome. You do have to do some minor woodworking around the safety area.  That is another reason to do it, you will have a useable safety too!  I probably will get one sooner or later for mine. I have 2 Timneys in my rifles and they are great!

I have a timney in my nagant. Highly recommended. I will not own a nagant without one. I sporterized mine so inletting for the timney was not a big deal to me. Greatly improved accuracy and got rid of that annoying military trigger slop. The side saftey is also a nice feature and much easier to use than the "saftey" if you can call it that, on a nagant.

The trigger in my M44 is acceptable. Don't think I'll change it out for a Timney. Really surprised me, the first time I shot this gun. Now, if the safety was only this acceptable.

A friend of mine has a Timney on a MN 91/30 and it works well.  I was interested in it primarily because it includes an easy-to-use safely.  However, I had a difficult time justifying spending more on a replacement trigger than I spent on the rest of the rifle.

Instead, I polished the trigger parts as per the directions on any number of internet sites, and made a pull ring for the cocking knob from part of a snap swivel for a dog leash.  I also cut a couple of turns off of the firing pin spring to make it easier to pull and turn the cocking knob.

The result is a smooth trigger and functional safety on a rifle that will reliably shoot 3 rounds into a 1.75 group at 100 yards with a 2.5x scout scope using handloads of Hornady 174 fr RN bullets and a starter load of H4350 that chronographs to 2500 fps from the 20" barrel of an M44.  I had it in a tree stand last weekend and had no problems operating the safety in a hunting setting.

Its always worth trying the trigger tuning first, and I use automotive 'anti-seize' compound on heavy trigger guns at the sear too. I havent bought a replacement trigger yet......
