Poppy Bush signed it into US law. McCain , Dole , supported it . True Bipartisan support all round.
US veterans wanted it. The whole world watching. An opportunity to advance the world towards U.S standards,
and a chance to be a true global leader for the advancement and dignity of humankind .......,

But no the far right obstructionist nut jobs shot UN treaty down that would ban discrimination against people with disabilities.
How can you walk by one of your own bound to a wheelchair in the senate chamber and then vote no.
Absolutely sickening. Just sickening.  A Day of Shame in Washington Senate.

Does anyone need any further proof these idiots only came to Washington to be obstructionists?.

Even China and Russia have done what 38 Senate Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, refused to do -
ratify a UN treaty on the rights of the disabled.

These Senators are disgusting

There are many that want to regress this country back to the dark ages.

First ask, would this treaty in any way better the lives of the disabled in this country?
Second ask, why would we need the UN to tell us, ( the country that has more laws for the protection of the disabled than any other several nations combined)  how to promote and protect the rights of the disabled in this country?
Third ask, why the UN cares? Or put another way what is in it for them.

arky65,

That  is not what ratifying this treaty would do. The UN would tell us nothing. It was us promoting our standards for others.
It did not give control to UN to tell us anything.  So much for America as  a true global leader affecting positive humanitarian changes.

read , understand.

Obstructionist took a good thing , a great thing and actually a republican Idea and just because it was put forth in this
partisan environment. They cut off their noses to spike their face and the world is less because of it.

Absolutely shameful.
As quoted  -

“It is a sad day when we cannot pass a treaty that simply brings the world up to the American standard for protecting people with disabilities because the Republican Party is in thrall to extremists and ideologues,” he said in a statement.

First, are we going to have to be taxed by the UN to pay for this treaty?

Second, is anything attached to this treaty that is unconstitutional like if you have post tramatic stress as a disability, you can never buy a gun?  Many vets are returning and being coached into claiming post tramatic stress to get disabilaty checks, mainly because they can't find jobs, and then are turned down when trying to buy a gun because they have a "mental disorder".  Did you know that.

Maybe the bill was rewriten to do some crazy thing like that and that is why they voted against it.  There is enough democrat senators to get it passed, wonder why it didn't pass with Harry Reid in charge?  Hmmm.  NRA supported him because he was supposed to be pro gun.

I kinda doubt if our residents liberals have read the treaty through.  they can't see past the surface.

scootrd,   if we are the standard for disabled rights in the world what is the point in ratifying this treaty. Is this a feel good thing. By us not ratifying the treaty what affect does this have on the disabled in the rest of the world.

Many vets are returning and being coached into claiming post tramatic stress to get disabilaty checks, mainly because they can't find jobs, and then are turned down when trying to buy a gun because they have a "mental disorder".  Did you know that.  The treaty, encouraged other countries to emulate the rights and facilities for persons with dissabilities that already exist in US. Veterans were for it as it would have helped disabled vets working or traveling  overseas.

Maybe the bill was rewriten to do some crazy thing like that and that is why they voted against it.  There is enough democrat senators to get it passed, wonder why it didn't pass with Harry Reid in charge?  Hmmm.  NRA supported him because he was supposed to be pro gun.  Treaty's require 60% majorities to pass.

The treaty, was already signed by 155 nations, ratified by 126 countries, including Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia.

All it stated was nations should strive to assure that the disabled enjoy the same rights and fundamental freedoms as their fellow citizens.

The lame objection given for not signing -
Republicans objected to taking up the treaty during the lame-duck session of the Congress.

Well I guess you can understand with them so busy and all - passing all that other legislation!!!! give me a break.
This was a good thing and they just wanted to be obstructionists. Even the republicans that did vote for it are disgusted with their colleges.
