Colorado Elk, bragging on my first
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:46:01 AM »
Had the best hunting trip of my life. I've got serious problems with my legs, and have to wear rigid braces from knees to toes. The outfitter and guide worked hard with my disability to make certain everything went well.

 Elk in the field
 6x6 rack
 Mine and my buddy's 6x6's

The guide called this 6x6 into 150 yards. It took 4 solid hits with a .300 Weatherby with factory 200 gr. Nosler Partitions to keep him from going down a couple hundred yards of steep slope. It was 4:30 in the afternoon and we didn't want to deal with bringing him back up. After quartering him out and hanging the meat it was a half mile walk and another hour or more on horseback to get back to camp at 9:00.

If anybody wants the outfitter info, let me know. Out of 69 hunters, 67 of us had the opportunity to shoot.

Hey, congratulations, beautiful animal.

By the time you have an elk cut, wrapped, and in the freezer, you know that by damn you have done something. Adventure, sweat, sore muscles, comradery, some of the most beautiful country God has created, elk hunting has it all. Damn shame there isn't room for oxygen in that country. ;D

Put in my fourth hunt this fall. Until you have done it, there just is no good explaination.  Took a buddy with this last trip. He wanted to go before but could not understand why I'm less excited about deer hunting now and spend all my time on this Elk thing. He gets it now. I used to tell him that it is a once in a lifetime hunt that can occur every year.

This was my hunting buddy's 10th trip, and my second.
He shot his biggest animal and I shot my first, both were 6x6's.

A father & son in our camp (son was 17) both shot on the count of three and each got a 5x5.
How cool is that?!

You're very right when you say whitetail hunting seems a little more tame now.

Congrats!  Elk hunting gets in your blood... Perhaps more than anything else I've chased...

Were you first season?  Where about?

Dukkillr,

We were second season, GMU 42.
Roughly 40 miles southeast of Rifle.
