Really nice winter jacket/over shirt. Not sure what to call it.
« on: November 28, 2012, 06:25:17 AM »
I don't like putting on and taking off a jacket every time I go out in the cold. Often wool shirts are too light and good ones are expensive, like Pendleton.

Well, I was at the farm supply store yesterday and they had some jackets that look like wool shirts, but have bigger chest pockets, and has waist pockets to put my hands or gloves in. The outside looks like classic itchy wool in a plaid pattern but is actually cotton. The inside has a fuzzy liner for the abdomen and smooth quilted lining for the arms. A sturdy metal zipper closes the jacket.

I tried it on and fell in love with it. Cost $50. It's just what I need for wearing around the house over a t-shirt, for driving, running errands, and going out for brief chores. Wish I had a picture. Very nice.

There was a time when I wore the quilted flannel shirts all winter as you describe. Not really sure why I quit.

This is a little different. I've had quilted flannel and they are good, but this is a departure from that. It's more jacket-like in that it has the hand pockets and the fuzzy lining instead of the quilt lining for the abdomen. The feel is different in that I get a sensation of warmth right away when I put it on indoors. The zipper instead of buttons is really nice too. You don't tuck this one in. It's worn like a jacket.

I used to wear flannel shirts too but I'm too lazy to do all those buttons. That's why I quit wearing them. In terms of duration, I think my oldest favorites have been sweat shirts. I wore fleece pull overs for a while and like them, but the wind cuts right through them so they really require a jacket when going outside most days.

I wear a light weight wool jacket all winter.  Has a zipper, and handwarmer pockets.  Also has buttoned pockets over the handwarmer ones.  Inside the button pockets there is cartridge loops sewn in.  It has a hood, and is camo.  Not the average camo, but more suttle shades of brown.  The main readson I wear it is that it is light and easy to slip on and off.  It's also wool which means if it gets wet it will still retain warmth.

I have a second one that is almost identical, except it has buttons.  I dislike buttoning it up.  I've owned the button one two years longer, but seldom use it.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

What you're describing is the CPO jackets I've worn since the 70s.  Some button up and some zip.

Old Syko, you are right. I looked up cpo jacket and that is it. Zipper variety.

Mine is $50 not three hundred plus like in the link,

Hillbill:
My layer depends on the temperature and how long I'll be outside. For a long day outside still hunting in weather in teens and twenties, I use synthetic moisture wicking long underwear top and bottom, and for a shirt I wear a Pendleton wool shirt. These are expensive, but are great, last a long time, and are excellent performers. Over that I wear either wool pants or brush pants, and a ranch coat that has a wool blanket lining and a tough canvas outside that breathes but stops wind. And a wool hat with a bill on it and ear flaps. Uninsulated shotgunning gloves for dexterity. Usually light LL Bean style pac boots or good quality hiking boots.

Got half a dozen or so.  Most vintage i.e. old, with the newest being 5 or 6 years old.   Some heavy some light and one that is missing some material. ;)

hard to find the good stuff without
costing an arm and half a leg.
i won't order mail order anymore hardly.
L-XXXL doesn't mean the same to everyone
anymore. then look at the label and it
says bang-la-dish or filla-peens or one
of those. the few i have are about threadbare

A flannel shirt with a vest over it is my main winter knock about if I am in and out. Easy to take one or both off and plenty warm most of the time. What is the brand that you are looking at. I have been wanting something heavier than a flannel shirt. the cpo sounds good. ear

We used to call them barn coats/jackets.
I have several---I like 'em.
Carhart makes some---not to my liking---too stiff. I like mine aliitle heeavier than a shirt--usually lined--NOT, LINED (heavy lined).
I have a couple of jean shirts that almost work--great for summer--in A/C.
I am cold blooded---BTW.

Blind Ear,

The brand is Field N' Forest, but it's a store brand for the place I bought it at and I doubt it's available by mail order. Try the web site for Mills Fleet Farm. But I think you'll be able to find something similar. The key to keeping the price down is to have cotton instead of wool. For my purposes, cotton is fine.

I like it so much that I wear it in the house too.
