'Guardian angel in fur' sticks by missing boy's side       by BELO affiliate  MICHELLE BOUDIN / NBC CHARLOTTE Posted on November 29, 2012 at 8:46 PM      Gallery  See all 5 photos »  CLOVER, S.C. -- It is hard keeping up with a 2-year-old, especially one as precocious as Peyton Myrick.
“When he turned two he would just take off,” said mom Carmen Myrick.

But his grandpa's dog, 'Ashapoo', is almost always nipping at the little boy's heels. And, as it turns out, it's a good thing.

“I was just shell shocked," Myrick said of hearing the news that Peyton had disappeared.

His grandpa says he turned his back for a minute as the two were preparing to search the family land in Clover for a Christmas tree Wednesday.

"You just never think that’s going to happen to you, and it’s scary. And as the night went on, four hours later, it's cold, dark. I thought to myself 'this is not going to end good.'”

Hundreds of volunteers quickly showed up to help searched the 300 acres of woods that surround the family home.

Peyton's dad, Rich, clearly remembers the moment he realized things might turn out OK.

“All of a sudden somebody said, 'Is it a black and white dog?' And everybody was like, 'yes.'  I kept thinking, 'I’m not going to get my hopes up.' A few minutes later somebody came out and said, 'They’ve got him, Katherine’s got him,' and I just remember screaming his name, taking off and running toward him, and I saw my sister holding him. At that point I knew he was going to be OK," father Rich recalled.

The little boy told his parents about his adventure.
“He mentioned he was scared, he was going to get hurt and he was cold.”
He told them he took a nap in the woods.
“I think he got scared and just lay down, and took a nap and Ashapoo stayed right with him,” Carmen said.

And when the time was right, Ashapoo lead rescuers right to Peyton--a quarter of a mile away behind this house.

“He was uninjured, the dog took care of him, came out when he heard nois, and took the people to Peyton. So we're very blessed,” Carmen added.

"Ash was his guardian angel in fur last night,” Rich said.

Call him a guardian angel, man's best friend--even a hero.

“Oh yeah, he is. If a dog can be a hero, that dog's a hero,” Rich added.

The family says they plan to buy the dog a steak and they’re looking into a GPS tracker for Peyton.

I like stories like this, makes you like dogs that much better.

Reminds me of the little Chihuahua tracked down the two little girls a few months back.  The girls got lost and search parties were assembling when the owner heard the girls were missing.  She brought the little dog out, and told it to go play with the girls.  The dog took of leading the lady into the woods.  Everyone laughed, and went on with the search planning.  They quite laughing when the lady and the little dog came out of the woods with the little girls.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I am a dog lover. I think we would have a miserable existance without their companionship.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Had the same thing happen to my grandson. He was in my back yard playing on the swing set. My wife looked out and the kid was gone. There was about 6 acres of lawn then 8 acres of woods. How he made it accross 6 acres without any one seeing him i will never know. My wife and i walked every foot of that place hollering and yelling for the kid. At the time my wife had a beagle. She said she was going to go get the dog. I told her good luck with that. The dog is so stupid i don't think he can find his own way out of the woods. My wife took the dog to the swing set and let him go. His nose went to the ground and away he went barking like crazy. The dog went into the woods and a couple minutes later he would come out and then back in to the woods. By the time the dog had made his third trip out of the woods my wife and i had walked out there. Followed the dog into a real thick spot and there is the kid setting on a stump. My wife asked the kid if he heard use calling him. He said yes but he was afraid he would get lost more than he already was if he tried to find us.

Great story. That breed of dog is bred to do just what he did. He thought the boy was a lost " lamb".

So do I .

When I was in AZ. I remember reading a story of a woman in her backyard having a picnic with her little one on a blanket. The phone rang she went to answer and a rattler tried to attack the toddler. the family dog placed himself between the toddler and the snake , took many multiple bites. When mom realized what had took place the Hero Dog was rushed to vet and remarkably recovered.

Mans best friend - You Rock , GOD is so Awesome giving us such loyal companions to share our lives with!!!!!!

It's been almost a year now since I lost my old gal Tessa. She was a great protector of "her" Goat herd and "Her" pot bellied pig buddies. She took her job seriously. Up until these present snows, at least a few times a week I still found myself over in that corner of the yard thinking of her while weeding her grave. I still have a big hole in my heart. Still hurts.

The earth trembled and a great rift appeared, separating the first man and woman from the rest of the animal kingdom. As the chasm grew deeper and wider, all the other creatures, afraid for their lives, returned to the forest — except for the dog, who after much consideration leapt the perilous rift to stay with the humans on the other side. His love for humanity was greater than his bond to other creatures, he explained, and he willingly forfeited his place in paradise to prove it……Native American folktale…an Ojibway tale

Glad that story had a happy ending!
I have raised and been around dogs all my life, and they can really come to the rescue in alot of situations!
When my youngest son was about two years old we had a Basset and she took over responsibility for that boy and when he was outside in the fenced in back yard no one or anything got to get anywhere near that child. She would follow him with  every step he made, and I am sure if he would have ever gone missing  that once she was given the command to find " Greg" it probably would have been a pretty fast search and find operation!
My yougest son is grown and has a Bloodhound, now that is another story, nothing gets by that " nose"!

Many years ago, my young family and I took a hike into a high mountain area of very thick woods.  This was in the winter time, but there was no snow on the ground yet.  Along with us was our wire haired fox terrier.  This dog was about as dumb as any animal that ever lived, but even at that, he might have saved our bacon.
As it turned out, it bagan to snow after we had walked quite a distance.  When the snow started falling I realized that we had better head back as quickly as we could so we could find our way amongst the myriad of animal trails we had followed.   We were doing alright with landmarks etc. until we reached a point where I was unsure of where to turn.  By this time the snow was really coming down and the trails were totally obscured.  Even though the snow was now nearly knee deep, the dog instictively took the lead and never hesitated a bit when he veered off the course we were on and before long he led us right back to our pickup.  You can bet he got a lot of attention that evening when we got home.
