Winchester Model 54 Carbines, .30-30
« on: June 09, 2012, 03:44:41 AM »
Hey Guys,

I have been looking at these on line.  Clearly the best bolt action carbine ever made in .30-30.

Does anyone know how many shells it holds in the internal magazine?  I can't seem to find this anywhere.  I know that since it has to be a single stack, it can't hold many.  (The Rem 788 mag and the Savage 340 mag only hold 3.)

   Thanks for any information.

I have a m54 action in 30-30. griffen and howe did the bolt handle like a model 70 many years ago. Firing pin assembly comes apart like a springfield. In fact you can use a springfield firing pin ( front half only) as a replacement on the 54's. Bbl stub is dated 1928. Frank

The M54 is the father of the M70. The m54 has a staggered box magazine. It uses many of the same components as the m70 and many were upgraded to m70 like status by changing safety,-drilling-tapping for scope mounts and bending bolts to clear. The 30 WCF(30-30) version is fairly rare and pretty valuable depending on originality and condition, of course..
