.223 scope? Can't decide
« on: November 21, 2012, 05:16:23 PM »
Traded a Stoeger shotgun I had for an older NEF .223 today it's not in great shape but after I strip and reblue it and do some work on the hammer it'll be lookin sharp but for the rest of hunting season I'm gonna leave it alone but I'm tryin to decide what scope I should put on it I'm gonna use it to deer hunt a little mostly my wife will use it for that but in going to coyote hunt with it as well what do you guys think would be a good reasonable scope for it?

For as accurate as it will likely be, the common 3-9x40 will work.  I have a Burris Fullfield II on mine.  No problems hitting turkey gong consistantly (though not 100%) at 500 yards.  4" clay disks stand no chance at 200 yards though.  The ability to turn it down to 3x will be beneficial if you don't have a shotgun along and a dog comes in close and fast.

Waaayyyy,  too many choices out there.   I have a Millet DMS-1, with the "circle dot" recticle that is a good choice.   Both Burris and Leopold make super scopes that would work for you too.

I have a few Handi's (including my .223's) wearing Mueller APV's (4.5-14X40)... it is not an expensive optic, but is sharp, clear and tough. A great value... and this is a very good power range for a .223;

They will do that.  As long as it extracts the round it's fine.

I have a Weaver V16 (4-16x40) and think it's a little too much for calling in predators.  I had a Sightron 6-24x42 and that was deffinately too much for calling.  Considering it's also a deer gun, I would try to find a low magnification/wide view angle scope.  Maybe 2.5-7x32.

I have two .223s.  One is wearing a Cabela's Tactical scope set up for a 55gr bullet.  I dial the scope for shots beyond 100 yards.  The second one I put a Nikon Coyote 4-14X40.  Not sure how I like the Nikon yet, have not used it that much, but faster not having to dial.  Top circle 100 yards, bottom top circle 200 yards, second circle 300 yards, third circle 400 yards.  Out to 300 it's dead on.  The local range only goes to 300 yards.  Have not had time to take it out and try it at 400 on the river bank.  Plus it's too cold, it's 45 below this morning, only up to 37 below at 1:55.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My stubby 223 Handi wears a straight 6 power weaver , my standard 223 Handi wears a 3x9 Tasco World Class. For the money the World Class is awsome for the money at about 80 bucks it's hard to beat.

hard to beat  3X9X40

cheaper  too
Harder to beat the 3-9 X38 Weaver v9 scope
Every bit as clear as the Leupold Var X II line only 3/4 The price.
I have a few rifles wearing this scope.
One being a 223 Bolt action that I use for Coyote and Javilina.

mine got a leupold 3x9x50
that's what was in the "junk" box
when i got it, so that's what went on
it.  a lesser scope would likely work as well.

Like several others I have a Mueller APV mounted on mine. It's a good combination for the 223 handi.
