45/70 BC
« on: December 04, 2012, 02:46:01 PM »
I went out today to try a new load in my BC. The load is Lee405HB and 70grs of RS Black powder. And the other was a 500gr Lee and 70gr of RS. The 45/70 loves black powder loads. At 100yds the holes were all with in a dime size. I install a 1892 Krag rear sight and at a 100yds the rear sight was set 150 and the gun shoots 3in high.

The 45/70 started out blackpowder and if you look at all the people shooting long range black powder. I have started shooting blackpowder in the BC after a buddy showed me targets that he shot.

Where is a good place to get a Krag rear sight like that?

Also, did you have to drill/tap any additional holes?

Thanks, Tim!

I have one of those Smith Enterprise ladder sights on my 45-70 BC, but they don't make those anymore.   I'd like to get something for my 45-120 BC.

The sight is off a 1901 krag rifle. I found on e-bay. And no I did not have to drill and tap any holes. I used the front hole and I had to open the rear hole up about .010 to get the rear hole to line up. The front screw is off the Williams rear sight and the rear screw is out of scope base because it is a little longer. I milled the bottom of the sight down about .025 to .030 to get it to mate to the barrel good. The front sight is Lyman .584 this give you elev for those longer shots. It helps.

Even so, it sounds like you are doing something right.
BTW, be sure to clean up the Pyro after use just as you would real BP, it is at least as bad for corrosion.
