New cannon making outfit

I saw this yesterday; sort of an unusual design.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Interesting idea. However; I'm not too crazy about seam welded steel.
They say: Our Barrels are made of Flat Stock High Carbon Spring Steel, Seam welded and then cut and reworked by hand to the desired specs.

Yeah, I read that too, and I'm not sure what's being described there. As far as design goes, I think I'll stick with a chunk of 1018 blind hole bored and turned to resemble something historic.

Yet the breeches are machined from solid stock.  I not sure I understand why they made the "barrels" from flat stock.

Yeah.... I'm having a problem with "High Carbon Spring Steel" Springs are great at flexing and returing to original form..... BUT springs have a working life and then they fail......... I don't want to be around when one of these fail......

I can't get past the aesthetics bump to the a point of caring what they're made of.

I find it interesting that they refer to this item as a golf ball launcher.

I think they should read their safety disclaimer before showing a instructional video doing everything wrong.

The entire design is suspect to me, having a threaded tube of that thin section does not inspire confidence to begin with, then adding that its rolled from flat stock, and longitudinally welded takes it to plain scary. For all the work needed to roll, and weld, then finish the tube, it would be easier, and less expensive to make it in one piece from bar stock on a machining center.  Sorry, no old retired Blacksmith stamp of approval for this thing.

That "carriage" frame looks like it came off of a wall mounted can crusher.  I don't see how that is going to last very long and when it does fail it is going to be ugly.

This Ain't Yer GrandDaddy's Cannon! And that ain't no carriage; that's a "competition steel stand."

Kabar - You musta missed the option to "INTENSIFY" the barrel with a "carbon wrap." I think that's the stuff they used on the space shuttle.  ;)

Talked to the engineer behind these.  Actually very well thought out.  Worth a call or email to understand his concept.  He admits he wants to redo his vid as he could have loaded it better.  The barrel sits 7" into the chamber allowing the 1" plus of steel around the barrel to get the pressure moving forward and out.  He feels the barrel takes minimal pressure.  I'm going to buy one and try it.

At first glance I would tend to agree with you.  Every thing about his guns supports what you are saying.

Then I get to this statement on his website.
Quote
"Our Barrels are made of Flat Stock High Carbon Spring Steel,  Seam welded and then cut and reworked by hand to the desired specs."
Right there everything he says and does comes into question. If he does not know that this  is wrong, what else is he doing wrong.

Then of course these cannons don't fit criteria for this board anyway.
