My new SxS
« on: October 17, 2012, 10:34:07 AM »
I got my new double 410 in the latter part of last week, and even though I'm still 'spose to be recuperating from surgery, I couldn't stand it any longer, and went out in search of the dangerous bushy  tail grays we have around here.  I didn't walk more than 60 yds. off the road and took a stand under some hardwoods with cuttings.  Before long I had several likely suspects cavorting above me, but they were and remained in the top of some very tall, very old trees, and probably 35 yards from my muzzle.

With a 12 I would not have hesitated, but after waiting awhile curiosity got the best of me, so I opened up, and 1-2-3 they came falling down!  And this was with 2 1/2" #6's.

I'm really stoked about this little shotgun.  It has decent wood to metal fit, balances well and recoil is next to nothing, so even with a patched up spine and stitches, it was very comfortable.

I can't say about it's long term duty yet, but from what it showed me today, I'm very well pleased in a $350.00 gun.

One of the regrets of my life was a little Stevens 410 SXS that an old store keeper talked me out of 40+ years ago. They are pretty much F&F chokes if I remember, and thy shoot as fast as a 12, or in fact , faster. I have shot some 3" #5's that reach just as far as any 12ga, just not the pattern size/density . Sounds like you have a sweetheart. Power, total energy that is, is not really relevant, it is getting a few pellets in that kill zone. I advise getting a reloader- those shells are pricey! They are a hoot to shoot though. Enjoy!

My wife is determined to get me a 410 for Christmas, especially since I explained to her that it was the lightest weight and lightest recoil shotgun there is. She just has not decided if it will hold one or two. I haven't been much help with that decision. There is just something about that 3.5 lb single shot...

She sounds like a keeper. A 410 sxs is on my list of things to get someday. It sounds like a fun squirrel gun.

You gotta love a 410 double. I'm blessed to own 2. A Stevens & a old LeFever. Even the Stevens I see sell for quite a bit. I'm glad there are new, inexpensive options now days.  ;)

I also have a 410 SxS. AyA Matador. Single trigger 26" barrels Mod/Full. Keep thinking I'll try it out as a training gun with my dogs. One of these days I will But I also have a 28ga AyA Matador that I dearly love.

I think that is what I'm getting my dad for Christmas.  He used to say he wanted a .410 SxS.  He has been hunting with my stevens .410 pump and seems to like it.

I have an old 1950's savage 22/410 choked full. Thats my squirrel gun as well as pest gun. You may get a surprise when you pattern the shotgun, mine will put 10 #6 shot in a 10" circle at 40yrds with a 3" shell. Excellent for rabbits also, doesn't bust them all up.

How about an update on the adventures of Ben and his 410...
Shot any brass loads yet?
Any new revelations about the Steoger?

PowPow, I loaded up 50 of the brass shotshells, and we used them to break some clays a few weeks ago.  Now in patterning, the factory has them beat, but they are still adequate.

If I take the factory shells, and load them with "sto bought wads", using my same cheapo procedure, they pattern as well as the factory.

No problems with the gun, but I've probably only put a couple hundred rounds through it.  When I get time to load all these shells, I'll turn the grand kids loose shooting it.  That will be the ultimate torture test.
