S&W Combat Masterpiece K-38 38 special 4'' blue
« on: July 06, 2012, 07:22:34 AM »
I picked up another gem amongst gems.  She is a sweet one.  Its my first 38 special.  My gutt feeling is to grab these when they pop up.  I don't see that many 38 and 357's here that are easy on the eyes let alone available.  Broke but happy.  11

Great classic revolver.  Had one years ago and it was a real shooter.

Wish I would have kept it.  Like you say, they're getting hard to find in great condition - at anything near a decent price!

Some of these prices can be about $200 away from a new S&W in some cases.  I try to shop around as much as i can.

I have one of the Combat Masterpiece revolvers.  Great shooter and accurate enough I used in PPC Duty Class before getting a 4" 686.  I still have the M15.

Great and accurate revolvers.  Here is mine, a 1951 "pre-15."  It is all original and very close to a bonefide 99%.  Shooting it is 100% satisfaction!

Here's the K38's cousin, a 1951, pre-18, 22 LR.  It too, is very accurate and in about the same condition as the .38 SPL above.

Kind regards - redleg

My dad had a model 15 in the early 70's and I carried one as a cop in the Air Force.  A fine shooting gun.  Last year my son and I were in a LGS and spotted a shelf full of security company trade in model 15's.  All of them were shooter grade, well worn finish but in excellent shape mechanically.  We each bought one at $225.00 apiece.  On our first trip to the range my son did the best shooting I've seen from him with a handgun.

The S&W combat masterpiece K-38 with the S&W larger grips feels good in my hands.  Even the S&W k-38 target master piece grips have a fatter feel to them in my hand.  I'm thinking to let the new shooters in the family restart off with the S&W k22 in 22lr first for accuracy.  Then they can shoot the 38's t master them before going with the magnums. The misses will stay with the S&W combat master piece k38.

This 4" S&W model 15 with factory target grips (these didn't come on this gun) is one of my favorites of all of my revolvers. This one is a FWPD (Fort Worth?) trade-in that I have had for about 13 years; I don't believe that it was shot much before I got it.

The K38's are getting harder to find.  The weight to power ratio with the 4" or 6" barrel does feel spot on.  They say there is a 5" barreled one too.   I'm attracted to these older 38's like fly's to dung.

Had a good weekend this last one, About 6-8 months ago I traded a model 15 for a EAA Witness 9mm I used to own also ( Yea i know but it gets better ) After shooting it I remembered why I got rid of it. Everytime I went in the store I wished I had my 15 back so finally this weekend I traded around again and got it. Sweet shooter and it's not going anywhere again.
Ok so couple days later man came in whit a nickle model 18 22lr and traded it in. Been wanting one of those for a while but never had money for it. luckily the man who runs the store wanted a pistol I had so I now have an 18 as well. Took both to range tonight and DANG!!!!! I shoulda got one of these years ago! Yup it has a permanent home now also...
Always been a Colt guy but these dang Smiths are creeping up on me :)

Mine's a Model 15-2 that I picked up 5 years ago for $300. It's got holster wear, but it works just fine.
It was the first S&W I have ever owned (and I'm 64), and I was so impressed that when the same shop put a 5" Model 10 on display for $250 I bought that one too.
