I have been trying to get to the T/C website at:  http://www.tcarms.com and can't make a connection for a couple of days now.

Has their website url changed?

Must be a problem with a DNS server for my ISP
« Reply #2 on: February 04, 2004, 01:21:54 PM »
There must be a problem with the DNS server for my ISP as it is refering me to an IP address of 205.219.188.177 that is not making a conneciton.  Won't even ping to it.

Thanks for checking it for me Bill.  I'll try it on a different machine later.

Tom,

Im in Arizona also..think I corresponded w/ you a long while ago. I work for an internet provider. This is what Im seeing from cox cable:

bash-2.03$ nslookup www.tcarms.com
Server:  idns1.phx.gblx.net
Address:  206.165.6.13

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    www.tcarms.com
Address:  205.219.188.177

bash-2.03$ ping 205.219.188.177
PING 205.219.188.177: 56 data bytes
64 bytes from www.tcarms.com (205.219.188.177): icmp_seq=0. time=68. ms
64 bytes from www.tcarms.com (205.219.188.177): icmp_seq=1. time=68. ms
64 bytes from www.tcarms.com (205.219.188.177): icmp_seq=2. time=69. ms
^C
----205.219.188.177 PING Statistics----
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip (ms)  min/avg/max = 68/68/69

www.tcarms.com can also be loaded in your web browser by using:

http://205.219.188.177/

Both urls work fine for me and I can ping their website fine. The IP address is good, so I dont believe your problem is a dns problem. I'd try rebooting your pc, or try another pc from wherever youre at. If both still dont work call your ISP, there may be another problem. Also check to see if youre having problems reaching any other websites.

Hope this helps,

Steve aka "Bandit"

Steve,

I apologize for taking this out of the hangun area, but just wanted to get your opinion here.  Posting this rather than contacting you directly in case anyone else has any ideas.

My ISP is not being very responsive to the problem with the usual tech support avoidance to the issue methodology.  They report that they can reach the site from thier location in Atlanta.

Because you can reach it from your network and they can from their location, and because the DNS server that I go through here in Phoenix returns the correct IP address, could the problem be that they have a problem with subnetting on their access server here in Phoenix?

Just trying to make an educated guess from prior experience.  Sent an e-mail to their support group this morning asking to speak to someone in their management.

What's your guess?

Thanks.

Thomas,

Im surprised youre still having that same problem. You didnt respond so thought you had it resolved. Well, you didnt really answer my questions. Did you reboot your pc? Have you tried a different pc from the same location? And is the second pc having the same trouble? Are you having problems reaching any other websites? Or is it just this one website? In order for a tech from an ISP to troubleshoot your problem he needs the following information:

Source IP
Destination IP or URL
A copy of a traceroute from your machine to the destination site

Also, the tech that works the problem needs to try to duplicate (as close as he can) the exact same path that you're coming from. Therefore if you're here in AZ, then why is the tech that helped you trying to duplicate the problem from another state? Makes no sense to me, but then again I dont have all the information. Not sure what operating system you are using, or how computer literate you are, but if you are using a windows operating system, you need to bring up a dos prompt, and traceroute from your machine to the website (tracert www.tcarms.com).

start, run, cmd, ok...should bring up a dos window, then:

tracert www.tcarms.com

I cant send you a copy of trace results ( as an example) currently due to a firewall at my site, however your isp should be able to help you. If the tech isnt helpful ask for his supervisor. I'd also recommend that you get a tech on the phone with you rather than just via email. Yes there could very easily be some sort of routing issue. The routeable IP block that you're coming from could be blocked for some reason. Only way to tell is to try to get your ISP to assist. What ISP are you using? You coming from a dialup connection, cable or ? Try more than one web browser, Netscape, and internet explorer. You seeing the problem from both browsers? These are just some suggestions, let me know how it goes....

Good Morning Bandit,

Well they had it fixed this morning. I thought I had answered those questions for you previously, but I had tried it from different machines, rebooting, different phone lines and access numbers and the only variable that was constant was that access server.

The problem was that the Hawk tech support personnel were more interested in avoidance towards addressing the problem in the hopes that either it would go away on it own, someone else would fix it, or I would give up. Unfortunatly this has become a common problem with technical support for quite a while as resources are pressed.

I really thank you for your help.

Thomas,

I work for an ISP that is geared towards big business rather than home dialup users. If you are calling dialup tech support...thats your first problem...hehehe ...congrats...guess keeping after them resolved your problem.
