Savage 22 Maggie
« on: December 06, 2012, 01:51:40 AM »
Morning all,

A good friend is in the market for a 22 Maggie bolt gun. His choice would be STS with blk syn stock and not allot of $$. ;)

Not at all confident at the Remlin's but a used older Marlin would be a suggestion. But baring that. What's worthwhile and brand new?

I have been reading allot and this Savage 93 comes up allot. Has anyone got one and what do you think?

Well, all your talk about 22 mags made me want one.
Being LH, wanting a bolt gun but not wanting to spring the $$ for another CZ, 93GL was the choice.
Inexpensive enough to where if it gets scratched, I won't cry.
Actually some scrathes would give it some character.

Had it about 4 months now and like it.
Nothing has stepped out in front of it yet except paper, but it seems the more I shoot it, the more accurate it gets.
If I had to do it over, I would.
Only drawbacks are:
1. got to keep it dirty for accuracy, easy enough to do.
2. mag likes to spit shells out sometimes unless you tweak the tabs that hold it together, easy enough to fix.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I have had a Savage 93 with the heavy barrel for several years. It shoots great and likes CCI  in HP and TMJ. I have never felt the need to try any other brand of ammo. The only drawbacks are the heavy barrel and undersized bolt knob. I have looked at buying a larger knob but they are already drilled and tapped with a larger hole than the 12-24 needed. The reason the heavy barrel was mentioned is I can't pack as much as forty years ago. It is still a blast (literally) to shoot swinging steel targets with, I will keep it!

I found a Savage 35M in a pawn shop yesterday and asked to look at it. I tried to cycle the bolt but it was very hard to open. As I closed it the handle broke off in my hand. Checked on new parts for it and found everything to repair it for less than 30 dollars so now I am going to go make a much better (very much lower) offer on the gun I hope. I don't have any Savage rifles. I do have a Marlin 25M that I got for 69 dollars at Gander Mtn.
Is there anything else I would need to check or look for on the gun. I have bought a few(30+) 22's and I am always looking for a new old one
