Need Help with 230 Grain .45 ACP Load
« on: December 11, 2012, 05:35:52 PM »
I need a good load for the 230 grain bullet with the .45ACP .   Just want to get 850 fps, like standard ball ammo. Not looking to hotrod it.

I have used Unique, but it was a little dirty.  Does anybody have an recommendations for a different powder?

Thanks.

You can use Unique which should burn cleanly enough if loaded to the right levels, WW231, Bullseye, Red Dot.  From my old manual 6.5 gn of Unique will bring the 230 gn cast slug to the velocity you want, so will 4.7 of  Bullseye (max load); WW231 uses about 6.1-6.3 gns to get you to 850 or so and Red Dot uses 5.3 gns to get you to 880.

I bump my Unique loads up a hair to 6.7 under the 238/240 gn Keith style swc designed for the 45 Auto Rim or 6.3 of WW231, with both charges getting up to about 875 or a bit better.  My manual(s) show the Unique loadings at below max and the same with the 231.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Mickey.  I used 6.5 Unique for years as well as 4.5 of Bullseye.  Never tried 231, but will give it a shot.

Thanx

I use a 230 grain lrn from Missouri Bullet Co. with 5.3 grains of Universal Clays. It works great and is clean.

Your going to find that 5.0 to 5.2 gr Bullseye will just about duplicate factory HB loads pretty darn close.
That is unless you are using something like +P 230 gr loads like from Buffalo Bore etc..

+1 on the Universal Clays. I believe 5.3 is what I use, haven't loaded any lately. Burns very clean. Also Titegroup seems to do well.
