"The tiny Nordic European island country of iceland is presently experiencing one of the greatest economic comebacks of all time.  After the privatization of the banking sector completed in 200o, the economy was thrown into a tailspin when over a five year period,  private bankers borrowed 120 billion dollars (10 times the size of Iceland’s economy). A huge economic bubble was created, causing house prices to double, and making a small percentage of Iceland’s population rich enough to buy up overseas investments, mansions, yachts, and private jets, while leaving an absolutely un-payable debt for all Icelanders. Iceland was facing national bankruptcy.
In response to the failed banking system, in October 2008, Iceland’s revolution against this financial tyranny began, rather casually in the street, in front of the Icelandic general assembly.
In the duration of five months, the main bank of Iceland was nationalized, government officials were forced to resign, the old government was liquidated, and a new government was put in its place. By March 2010, Iceland’s people voted to deny payment of the 3,500 million Euro debt created by the bankers, and about 200 high-level executives and bankers responsible for the economic crisis in the country were either arrested or were facing criminal charges.
In February 2011, a new constitutional assembly settled in to rewrite the tiny nation’s constitution, which aimed to avoid entrapment by debt-based currency foreign loans. In 2012, Iceland’s economy is expected to outgrow the Euro and the average for the developed world, as estimated by the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development"

Back in 2009 after the election of 08 a lot of Anericans were pulling up roots and moving to Iceland.
Many of them headed for a remote town in a mountainous region there called Selfoss.
It has long been a destination for Americans dating back to the early 1970s. When I was about 10 years old my parents visited there for Christmas. I don't remember much except it was very beautiful
and they mostly spoke English. Back in 09 the WSJ had an article about this and said the influx of
American money into the banks of Iceland was a major plus for its then failing economy.

Finland was another one where American expats were heading, there it was mostly retirees on pensions. The US Navy and AF base at Keflavic are about the only military presence there, and they
are located along the SW coastline near Raykjavik Icelands largest city and capital. Iceland has a
climate similar to Akaska, and the one thing anyone needs to know about that country is that they
do NOT tolerate drunk driving. You get about one chanch and that is it, after that you could find
yourself in prison or never driving again. I don't know about now but back in the 70s Iceland had
a very large communist population block that was very pro Soviet.

They used to go around singing that old Don McLean song ( American Pie ) which then was an
indicater of Icelands dissapoval of any American presence in their country. They were very anti
British back then but I don't know what their sentiments are today on either of those subjects.
But she is an attractive destination even for just a vist. As long as your not drunk and driving
no one would ever mess with you. And there is a joke that goes around up there commonly
heard among our single servicemen about the Icelanic women. That there is a woman behind        every tree, if you can find a tree ! But that isn't the case the further you get into the interior.

Sooo....what happened to the people/corporations that Iceland owed? Did they just get screwed out of their money? Sounds like it. They loaned the money in good faith, Iceland still exists......they should have to make reparation of some form......they got the use of it, now they should have to pay it back. It's not the fault of the creditors that Iceland chose lousy government representitives in the first place.

Sure enough! And when nations start walking away from their Debt responsibilities......there goes her pension.
 
I get a huge kick out of those here who rail about "Corpo profits". They don't want you think about the very real fact that those coporations are made up of people.......just like your wife, who put up the money in the first place. It's mostly misdirection on their part as they keep making rather blatant asides about socialistic changes....which we have all seen before and know they don't work.
 
What works and has worked for many years is to let the private sector manage itself and cut government to the bone. Every dime that goes to "government" is lost to the economy, in one way or another, but they will swear that it isn't so, all while pushing their socialist agenda.

I've been preaching exactly this to the liberals on this board.  millions of people have large amounts of money loaned to corps in the form of stock.  and they rightly expect a dividend on that money.
but the liberals would deny them that right by taxing the corps until they have to go offshore to make a profit.

Then the amount left over is taxed at a  marginal tax rate. At that point, the dividends can be distributed to the  investors in the company. At which point it is taxed again

You guys have to remember, Iceland received a huge influx of US dollars that she did not recive
from our government. She got it from the exodus of US expats moving there during the last six
years. Its the same with the Euro,Europeans who are sick of the same old crap are also moving
there in droves. Iceland in her wisdom is welcoming these people with open arms, unlike we are
doing with Mexico. A part of the relocation requirements are that you can show where you would
be a productive member of her society, and not a leech on her economy.

Selfoss may as well call itself small town USA, and many of her new citizens are from our own
California ! Finland is no different, this country has become the secret get away for people living
on pensions. I know a retired ATF agent that is in the process of moving there now. Right now his
family's only hold up is awaiting a conex shipping container to move his furniture and a ship to haul
it. He told me the waiting line for shipping was his biggest headache in this, ships are backed up
in the Atlantic for six months lead time. And if you are not there with your stuff on time your space
goes to the next in line and you have to start all over.

If it were me and it soon could be, I would pick Iceland. With the exception of drunk driving the governent there is small and unintrusive . Homes are heated by geothermal at very little cost to
the consumer. Power plants produce electricity the same way, from what comes out of the ground
naturally. One thing about both these country's is, you check your Anerican politics at the door.
They have thier own way of doing things. In Finland although regulated, this country has the third
largest privately owned gun population in the world. And we don't see them shooting each other up.
Why is this ? Because Finland is very picky about who she lets come into her country, or who owns
a firearm. Unlike some places we know you just do not swim across her borders and expect her
government to suck up to you for the votes.

And I would say some things I've heard her government say about the way we are doing this.
But here that would be considered racist and would hurt the tender feelings of those who could
care less about America or its traditions. These country's have seen the face of communisum.
Socialism to them is conditered as only a transition phase to something that more closely resembles
Switzerland. After that socialism by thier own charters is to be abolished. You can't go by what you
read here about this, we are on the verge of becomeing what these guys are tossing out. Of course
our media isn't going to admit to this and that others may be becomeing what we once were.

Apply to these country's for citizenship and you will then get the real story.  Adios mi amigos !

It's why they like you to be armed. Them taking on the Swiss form of self defense sure worked well
for the Swiss during WW2. It's like the old question of how do you prevent airline hijackings?
The answer is to give everyone a gun !
