The fascinating thing is that this sort of thing is now happening all of the time in the news. A news organization publishes something, and it turns out to be false because they were fooled. The editorial restraint value and fact checking, etc that has traditionally been cited as an advantage of the news services is no longer valid. Not that it ever was, but it's much less reliable today than in the past.
My understanding is that some film school students made it. Then again, the report that it's a fake may be wrong, and it actually is true.
