« on: December 12, 2012, 04:28:49 PM »

did they not make many  or people don't part with them?
who  has one and how do you like it?

i know ammo is not that common  but not rare either

I called H&R about having a 22" 28 gauge barrel added last week, and they said in stock no problem.  The Wal-Mart in Southern IN near me stocks 28 gauge shells year round.

I had a 28 ga accessory frame for my 30-30. Lots of FTF's; I think I read its because the rifle firing pin is smaller than the shotgun firing pin. Probably in some FAQs somewhere. Shells cost twice as much as 20's; when you figure in FTF's, its even higher. Still, I killed a lot of quail with it.

my main interest  is just to have one in all the guages

is   it closer to a 410  or closer to a 20ga?

any thing  it really accells at?

my thinking was look for the youth 22 inch barrel
as this would be a great starter gun once the grand kids master the 410
or at the other end.....in case my old mom wants to try to bust a skeet
or should i get the  longer full sized barrel?
are they mostly  choked full like a 410 to take full advandage of a small payload?
or is choke pretty much like a 20ga where they are varied?

is this  any ones  FAVORITE gauge ?

what size  shot  is good  here?
#4  for some reason seems to be popular in the 410.....don't under stand why

is it pretty much like any other shotgun  only smaller?

IMHO full choke in a 410 or 28ga. is too much choke unless you are an expert, so I would hope they arent just that. Id go with the longer barrel too, even for youths, for better swing.

my 28 ga barrel was 22" and mrked modified choke.
never patterned it.
Alll I could find for 28 ga shells was 6's and 8's; i guess because its a bird gun caliber.
410 is mostly a squirrel gun caliber, so 4's are available, along with some other sizes.

I purchased one of these a couple of years ago. Low recoil and more potent than the .410. Since I don't shoot as much anymore, I don't worry about the cost of shells. The 28 ga. is a great small game gun.

Vicious kicking 12s kept me from gunning for years, it just was not enjoyable, and I knew no better. A few years ago I picked up an H&R 20, then a SxS 20, then an O/U 20 (both under 6# loaded, how VERY sweet). I am quite sure I would enjoy a 28 (and anything a 410 can do a 28 can do better). Though Im gunned enough with what I have in the 12 slugger and the 20s, adding a 28 would be a full spectrum for me.

I love my 28. I have the 25" modified choke. It has a higher payload and patterns better than a 410, and is actually a higher velocity than most 12 ga loads. I think it is a far better gun than a 410 to start a young shooter on. The std 3"410 is 11/16 oz, the 28 is 3/4 oz. Both are expensive, but 28 ga are much more user friendly and easier to reload. My 410 loader is finicky, wrinkles cases and is a pain to crimp, the 28 is much easier and neater.
I like a full choke 410 and #5 shot for squirrels in the tall hickories, but for rabbits, squirrels on the ground or low, dove over decoys, even Teal, and especially woodcock, the 28 is perfect. I had a 20ga 22" which I swapped for the 28 ga 25" here on the classifieds to a guy who did not like the $ for shells and did not reload. I consider it a super trade. ;)
I use 8's & 9's for dove and woodcock, 6's for most else.
I only wish they had made TDC in all guages.

I love my 28. The shells are easy to come by and inexpensive (I buy the cheap RIO brand). It's closer to a 20 than a .410 in effectiveness and has very little recoil. A great guage....<><....:)

I have a 28 gauge I bought a few months back that's still NIB just because I've been so busy. You might also consider some Breneke Slugs for it.

walmart  was  $17?   for 12 and 20ga......i assume IF they had a 28 to be the same

things have gone crazy....maybe the dollar  is just not worth much

thanks for the link to  e-bay
thats was twice what i paid  for the complete 16 ga
and  just a little less than i paid for a comple gun in 28ga

if he sells it  i might just order some more  28ga and have the stocks and recievers to play with
