A lil' hunting story.
« on: December 20, 2012, 03:46:59 PM »
Got home from church Sunday afternoon late, and had a real itch to go hunting.  The problem was it was pouring rain, and I didn't have enough daylight to go to my land.

So I grabbed the raingear and a slug gun and headed for public land about 4 miles away.

Standing in a steady hard downpour, looking over a long dry slough in the lake, I spotted deer about 300 yds away.  They were taking their own sweet  time easing my way, stopping to chat or whatever deer do, and it was becoming a race between their getting in range, and darkness falling.

Finally they passed the marker I had on a tree limb for 200 yards.  About 50 yards more and I would feel confident in the sabot slug.

From the corner of my eye I see movement to my left, a flash of something and the deer left the way they had come in a big hurry.  A coyote was preoccupied with catching his supper, a mouse or vole or such, and was less than 20 yards away.  I shot him twice for good measure.

It's always nice to use good measure on varmints ;)

I have passed once or twice on coyotes and have always regretted it.

Good story!

good read.
i never pass on one even if deer hunting
at the time. it would be a tough job to
make a dent in the population here
shooting them on a continued basis,
kinda like feral hogs.

Predators deserve the follow up shot...particularly the ones that ruin a good hard driving rain hunt!

I agree, the deer were already gone and you may have saved a fawn or two from next years crop.

a few years ago i was hunting during the muzzel season, i had got tired of sitting and went for a walk.soon i saw 4 deer crossing a fence and coming towards me at about 40 yrds, i looked to my right and there was a coyote sitting in the brush about 20 yrds south of me,he didnt see me and was attentively watching the deer come right at him.when the deer got about 10 yrds from him, he charged them.they scattered and one nice doe ran right at me and i shot her at about 15 feet.

i tried to find him to thank him for his help but he had ran off lol!
